30 Minute Session (Best ever trance tracks?)
View this Thread in Original format

I've managed to get out of this dj night. But the owner still want's me todo a set for 30 minutes. He want's to see how the crowd react to a 30 minute trance segment done by myself.

I am going to create the mix in Acid 5 and then play some synth lines live for my own tracks.

What is the top 10 vocal/melodic trance tracks of all time to fit into this set? What works well?

Both my own productions are in Dm & Am. I want to open the set with a euphoric start and a huge synth breakdown. I considered the radio cut of Above & Beyond - What it feels like for a girl.

Any advice on what would keep the mood flowing in similar vocal style after this. I will do all the beat matching and mixing within acid so their is no fear of anything going wrong live.

I'm thinking tracks like...

Above & Beyond, York, Armin, Paul Van Dyke, Oakenfold, etc..

Touching on commercial but still melodic and uplifting.

Looking for progress, epic, melodic/vocal trance tracks to insert into this mix.

If anyone has a good list of maybe 5/10 uplifting trance tracks that are tried and tested, please post them. I'm keen to get to work constructing this mix!

What I would do is play a few vocal tracks and instrumental tracks.

- Oceanlab tracks would be perfect after that one, such as Clear Blue Water, Sky Falls Down, Satellite (Beautiful Together is alright, not the best in my opinion, but definetly any of those are).
Any remixes of these tracks would be great too, like infamous Ferry Corsten Remix of Clear Blue Water, or Armin Van Buuren Remix of Sky Falls Down.

- Thrillseekers, like Syaesthesia, either the Thrillseekers Club Mix, En Motion Remix, Ferry Corsten or Paul Van Dyk Remix (the PvD Remix is unbelievable, full of energy). The crowd may even go for Dreaming Of You, definitely a track chicks would dig, kind of early morning chill trance, but still energetic, almost a dance pop track more than a trance track.

- Paul van Dyk, such as Tell Me Why (The Riddle) or Together We Will Conquer (for vocal), For An Angel, Another Way or Connected (Moto Mix) for an instrumental track.

- Armin Van Buuren, like Blue Fear, Communication, Burned With Desire (Rising Star Mix or Ronski Speed Dub/Remix), or Yet Another Day, or even his latest called Shivers, although I'm personally not a fan of it.

- Ferry Corsten or System F, like Out Of The Blue, Cry, Solstice, Exhale etc.

- Old Tiesto, like Lethal Industry, Obsession, Flight 643, In My Memory etc.

- Lustral, such as Everytime, especially the Mike Koglin or Nalin & Kane Remix, also check out the new track called Solace, with some really nice remixes, like the Benz & MD Aurium Remix or the
Vorontsov & Dorohov Remix.

- Xpander by Sasha, a definite classic, or Heaven Scent by Bedrock.

- Greece 2000 by Three Drives On A Vinyl, another classic trance track from 99.

- Last but not least...Solar Stone. Seven Cities is definitely one of the best all time tracks, and so is Solarcoaster as well.

Just check out some of these artists/songs and see which ones you like. You may already have them in your collection, but a lot of them are a must.

You said York, so I say:

York - On The Beach

:D

Open the set with a euphoric start and a huge synth breakdown.

How about: Aria - Dido (Armin van Buuren's Universal Religion Mix)

A similar track that is good for an ending could be:

Perpetuous Dreamer - The Sound Of Goodbye (Armin van Buuren's Rising Star Mix)

Another one you might want to conside somewhere in the middle:

Saltwater - The Legacy (Alphazone Mix)

Anything popular from the golden days will do.

Space Manoeuvers - Stage One (Tilt's Apollo 11 Mix)
Grace - Not Over Yet (Breeder Mix)
PvD - Forbidden Fruit / Another Way
Nalin and Kane - Open Your Eyes
Natious - Amber (Lightning Mix)
Tastefully chosen ATB tracks
Blank and Jones - Cream
etc...

Tracks like these @ 140+ bpm

30 minutes isnt a very long time though...only around 4-5 tracks. You shouldn't have a problem. Stay away from cheese at all costs.

Ok... you want a huge synth to start with..

No way you can go past Viframa - Cristalle

its the ultimate opening track... if u havent heard it u must try find it somewhere.. its gold

thanks for the excellent replys. Nice to have some support here.

I visited that said club last night (wednesday night is now the 'new' DJ night for the next month or so). I checked out some of the other local talent and alot of complex, deep mixing was being performed using CD decks + Vinyl.

I myself will be using either traktor or live 5 (laptop + controller). I might also prepare some part's of the mix before hand in Acid.

Their were 4/6 DJ's starting from 9pm onwards. They were playing either the following genres of music:

Deep House
Funky House
Disco House
Commercial (nu disco) house

Alot of commercial tracks remixed and dubbed live. I am not sure if my style of trance (or any trance) is too much of a big change for this place? I was considering going down the same root and playing the likes of Mylo instrumental mixed with Yazoo - Dont Go acapella, keeping a funky, danceable vibe going. Not sure if the trance will cut it well? I guess well choosen trance will work well.

On a friday/sat night this club hold's around 1500/2000, but last night their was only about 100/120 people their. Not many people were actually dancing! I am on next wednesday night (might be thursday now though) so i am guessing it's not too much of a knock-out if thing's go bad, plus it's only a small number of people their.

With that said, it is being judged as they are looking for a new friday night DJ. I wouldn't mind getting this spot so i could test that week's productions live at this venue.

I've produced five house style remixes to date so i would be comfortable playing either style. My passion is in composing and producing trance (melodic, epic, progressive). Like i've said previous, i'm new to the whole dj/mixing thing, so picking good tracks is essential.

If anyone has an idea for a complete playlist, please feel free to post.

@Spirit5

We seem to have similar taste in music. Got any idea's for a playlist yourself mate? :)

Coming on here and asking everyone what to play is hardly 'doing it yourself' is it?

TBH you don't sound like you're ready to play a club.

Not trying to put you down (im sure you expected a post like this), but if your "DJing" with pre-mixed sets on acid, i wouldn't call yourself a DJ but more a Music Selector. (I got this when i started too so i worked my ass of and have learned to spin the old school way). If your doing a live bit using something like ableton....well its a little different but yeah still kinda the same.

My suggestion, if its going to be like a normal set, and you producer, put some extra effort into it, layer your own beats into the set that way it atleast looks like your being new and creative, rather then letting a computer do "the work" for you

Again, this is how i started, not trying to rip into you or anything else. Just giving you the run-down

Although I wouldn't be caught dead premixing my sets in Acid, don't let a DJ put you down for doing it. This community direly needs to get rid of its stank-ass elitist trance DJ attitude. I hope your set goes well -- play hard and play what you want, that way if the crowd digs you it really means theyre diggin you. Good luck.
