Hey guys im new to producing music, and i am using Cubase SX attached to a midi keyboard with vsts and everything is coming out cool...however, i have a question...what exactly does quantize do?
is it what i think it is...that it aligns the midi keys you recorded with the beat (assuming you set the Cubase project tempo to 138, average trance beat)??
if thats not what it is, then how do i do that? because i find it a little difficult to be able to play a melody and have it go exactly with the background trance kicks...im always a little off no matter how hard i try to stay on beat while playing even though i only have a latency of 2 ms which is awesome(i even use the ticker noise to guide me to play in sync with the beat, but it really doesnt help much)...any ideas anyone how i can get clean music matching the beat perfectly?
thanks in advance |

i have 4 ms latency and works fine for me. try quantizing it lower like 1/16 or 1/8. |

Yes, that is precisely what quantize does. If you have the auto-quantize turned on, then it will quantize while you record to whatever unit is selected.
However, I'd suggest not using the auto-quantize and doing the quantize later, because (a) the MIDI timing sucks in Cubase and nothing ever ends up in the right place when you use the auto-quantize, and (b) sometimes you *want* those slight timing inaccuracies to make a track sound less computerized. |

Ya, you just try to time it right, then stop and adjust right away. If you get it timed close enough, its just a matter of moving over one block and then fixing your length. You get use to it eventually. I did. |

I always record the notes i wanton my keyboard,
then double click the midi part you just created to get into the piano roll, then just drag your notes so they sync up correctly.
i then sound like jean michelle jarre when i play it back!

Whu bother. Often a slighy offbeat sequence sounds better than an exact on the beat one.
If it sounds ok, don't boher. |
