I love how Newsweek does a story on meth and suddenly its the new "national epidemic". This stuff has been around for decades. So why all of a sudden is it being talked about in 2005 with such furor? Slow news day maybe?

Our provincial government wont do anything about gun violence but dont worry because they will protect you from evil sudafed and pitbulls from lucifer!

BTW they succesfully put an end to most of the rave scene yet they still make "record ecstacy busts" such as the one in Calgary yesterday. I guess raves weren't really the problem after all eh?

The media disgusts me.

TORONTO (CP) - Ontario is considering restricting the sales of some popular cold medications because they contain the key ingredient used to make crystal methamphetamine.

Health Minister George Smitherman says the province may require prescriptions to buy cold medications containing pseudoephedrine, including Sudafed, Actifed and Contac.

Smitherman says it's one of many suggestions under consideration by a special provincial working group set up to combat the spread of crystal meth, a deadly street drug.

He says the government is taking the spread of crystal meth into Ontario communities "very, very seriously" and wants to arm itself with the latest information before taking action.

Former Conservative health minister Elizabeth Witmer says she too is concerned about crystal meth and supports limits on sales of medications used to make the drug.

But Witmer says she thinks the Liberal government has been too slow in responding to the crystal meth problem.

bahahaha I've seen some articles that basically show people how to make meth. All this exposure will make it a more popular drug I'm sure.

What stupidity. Every day this week I've seen a newer, stupider, less informed article on this issue. I guess they just needed something new to create a panic with, since weed was kinda getting to be old news. Guess by the end of next week we'll have someone claiming that their child got high off of meth by drinking caugh syrup :p

Wait, who's putting meth in caugh syrup?

I'm not quite sure how they think banning or restricting decongestants is going to help. First off, people making meth don't go and buy a whole whack of sudafed in one place... they buy a few packs at a bunch of places... less of a heat score then buying by the case. Second, if they can't get it at all in Ontario they will just set up shop in Quebec and ship it to Ontario for sale... okay meth labs won't be exploding in suburbia people will still be railling lines.

I think it would be fair to the Liberal gov't to point out that the former CONSERVATIVE health minister appears to not only be in support of this measure, but feels the gov't should have acted sooner.

silly initiative though, I agree...

btw...fill me in, because I don't understand...but why do you keep saying the *provincial* Liberal gov't ought to do something about guns???

Policing is generally a municipal or regional matter in Toronto and surrounding areas and anything to do with the border or customs is Federal jurisdiction, no? Why make this a provincial matter if the feds could handle it?

Policing is a provicial jurisdiction. Some municipalities maintain police forces but they are partially funded by the province and ultimately it is the province that is responsible (BNA Act). Additionally, the province has some jurisdiction over fire arms laws.
