soups you are spot on. i saw the new one in montreal last week and was very dissapointed. the original is an absolute classic, and the new one just has nothing to it at all. johnny depp is strangely bad, i thought he would make a great willy wonka but he was just left looking a like a michael jackson clone with an irritatingly high-pitched monotonous voice. gene wilder was perfect and had those cuttingly sarcastic lines that brought out wonka's general dislike of children, and callous disregard of the misfortunes that fell their way. depp comes across as indifferent, but lacks that extra bit of maliciousness that makes the original wonka's character so amusing rather than just weird.

and yes the oompa loompas, which made the original, are crap, and all have the exact same indian face, eliminating the community/wizard of oz feel of the originals and generally makes them much less endearing. the songs are crap too, and the whole synchronized dancing routines are a bit on the lame side.

the ending was overly corny as well, and the lack of the gobstopper 'test' (or some kind of creative equivalent) detracts from one of the main points of the original which was that wonka was trying to find somebody he could trust with his secret recipes and overall business, after his previous betrayal by factory worker spies. argh i could go on, but tim burton, shame shame shame. i expected much better!
