I've asked this before, but many things have come up. I recentely succesfully attained a record deal and my career is gaining foot. So I thought that I might spend just a bit more then I felt like I wanted to before this event came to place. Here is what is on my mind.
Old Things i'm keeping:
400 GB Hard Drive 1x 240gb and 1x 160gb
Nvidia GeForce 6800GT OC Graphics Card (Custom Overclocking aswell)
Sound Blaster Audigy (I know it has ASIO problems and other things but it's good enough for me at the moment)
X-Connect 500W PowerSupply (Godly)
New:
AMD 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core Processor
2 Gigabytes DDR400 PC3200 Ram
And ofcourse a new mobo
Event TR6 Monitors
I looked back at the "Build a whole new PC from scratch" thing and I thought to myself, "Hey, i've got my old case and hard drives that i love and all my other features why not just transfer?" So what do you guys make of this? Any feedback would be great. |

It's a bit early to buy 64-bit CPU's! There's so little software supporting them right now, and it will take a long time before any music programs takes advantage of the 64-bit prosessor.
The performance of the 64-bit processors under 32-bit mode is quite good, but I don't know if you get what you pay for. I have Intel now, and I think they deliver better performance for music production. I had an AMD before, so I talk from experience. |

If he's not planning to update his CPU again in a couple of years, then he might aswell buy a 64bit now. That's what I would do. The software will come in time.
Intels give more stable perfomance. In that sense they are good for DAW use. As for raw calculating power, I don't think they are any better. |

| Of course you can transfer whatever is still useful. Those things you mentioned are definately not for throwing away I think :) |

| Well thank you guys for the replies. I dont want to upgrade anytime soon, so that is why im going 64. Better in the long run, once many things acquire the whole 64 bit technology ill be there with the dual core i believe? Which is why im buying dual core basically for multitasking and just work and such. Ill still use it for games because who doesnt like playing battlefield 2 ?!?! |

But then why not wait say 2-3 years. 64bit technology will have become mainstream. The prices of 64bit cpu's will drop as todays current cpu's (p4's, xp's etc) will no longer be on the market.
If he was to use your method he will have 64bit technology he will barely use if at all (how many apps can you list that are coded to take advantage of 64bit..excluding 64bit XP). Not only that come the time he does get to see the benefits a few years will have passed and he'll be ready to upgrade again.
:)
OT but as for the ultimate production PC mine would be based on dual/quad intel xeons and dual/triple tft's :D |

Well in the end, it's just up to him. He can make the 64bit update now, or be updating again when 64bit software is common. Both options have their up & down sides. |
