Have you been honest in paying child support? Well in Canada that's not good enough!

It’s a decision that could result in a serious jump in child support payments for parents across the country.

Toronto lawyers filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada on behalf of four Alberta fathers who were ordered to provide huge sums of money for retroactive support payments – one of the parents was asked to hand over more than half of his annual income in one shot.

An Alberta court ordered the dads to provide the immediate payments stretching back as far as 1997 based on their incomes over the years.

The fathers have always complied with the courts, but problems arose thanks to unsettled business between the federal and provincial governments regarding support payment calculations.

Eight years ago, Ottawa set out guidelines for child support, which calculate the amount a parent has to pay based on their tax returns. The feds would then let parents know about any adjustments. But part of the agreement stated that the provinces had to sign on to the plan, which they didn’t.

Separated and divorced parents currently figure out how much the payments will be by working out an agreement with their lawyers, or, they receive a court order telling them how much they have to provide.

But some lawyers argue that as a person’s situation changes – they make more money annually, or they remarry – the amount they provide for their children should change.

And that means anyone who’s been paying child support under a court order or a separation agreement made within the last 15 years may have to make the back payments.

One of the divorced dads in the appeal has been ordered to pay $100,000 in retroactive support – that’s more than half of his yearly income. Another parent who has never made more than $23,000 a year has been told he has to pay $10,000 in back claims.

Disgusting. Something has to be done. There should be income support limits. Why should you pay a woman 50,000 a month just because you are a millionaire? The payment is for the clothing, shelter and education of a child. This can be easily achieved for no more than $2000 a month maximum (assuming that she is also responsible for the other half)

This is getting out of hand. No wonder so many honest guys these days simply just leave the country.

ing disgusting. I agree, I dont care if you make a hundred million dollars, your kid only needs so much to live properly.

And the mother (assuming shes the one keeping custody of the kid) needs to putting her bloody fair share in too always!

So even if she's on welfar, using your figure cap at say $2,000 a month, that's MORE than enough to ensure that kid lives properly. Hell, if she's on welfar, some of that money (or MOST of it) prolly isnt even going to the kid. WTF! Jesus christ this is disgusting.

I dont care if he has all the money in the world, it still dont entitle the other partner to steal 1/2 of it from him simply bc he/she's more fortunate (or how about this, bc he/she WORKS harder) than his or her ex-partner!

ing balls. Reading that actually almost enrages me.

Jesus christ.

P.S. And if the kid thinks he "deserves" a better more extravagent lifestyle growing up, then when he or she is old enough, he/she can CHOSE to move out of his/her current situatin and move in w/ the richer parental figure.

I agree with you, when i read this i couldnt believe what we are coming to sometimes!! :whip: ing hell.

People have always been greedy, especially lazy people. The real question is, why are the courts taking their side?

Actually, we all know the answer to that, it's because the courts in Canada exist to enforce the status quo, which in this case is the Deadbeat Dad stereotype.

And I don't want to hear any bull about how I don't understand how hard it is for the single mom, because my sister is one of those. It's hard, but it's not six-figure hard.

This site is a bit militant but it does raise quite a few good points about how unfairly treated men have become in the quest for feminine "equality".

Damn right its NOT!

And if the tables were turned and the man was raising that kid, one can ONLY hope that the woman will be coughing up equally as much money to the man... though Im not convinced that would be the case.

(though in the first place, no one should be paying that kind of riddiculous sums in child support anyways...)
