Big DJs Loosing Their Touch
View this Thread in Original format

Okay i've had this thought lately, noteably about DJs like Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto, who once were really great DJs and now are fading away. Their skills were really good like with mixing and producing, but now it seems like both of them have lost their magic touch. My biggest fear is that this might happen to others like Armin, Ferry, Schulz etc. Is it that they get tired of trying to mix? I mean sure it's the track selection that is really important, and Tiesto does play some great tracks and puts on a great show (seen him and Oakie twice) but his mixing seems to have gotten worse. He seems to have lost his touch with production as well, and don't even get me started with Oakie, ever since Bunkka, his productions have been poor and his DJing...mediocre. Why do other people think this is?

Because they've found that they no longer have to work hard; enough people love them to the point where they'll be famous no matter how much they suck.

Oh, and this thread is going to end up being a flame-war within the next three pages.

people change, music changes, our tastes change.

what it boils down to, as far as i'm concerned is that we have this impression of these dj's from when they first started effecting us. They had a certain style of music they played.

A lot of that specific style of music isn't made anymore

Some DJ's play the same stuff they always did, but if our taste changes and they are the same, to us they lose that touch. We sort of expect them to grow with us.

some dj's try new things. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Other's seem downright lazy, don't they?

Rock stars kill themselves or fall off the map.

I tend to believe very few people have consistently good and prolific creative minds.

Most people kinda just jiz it out and then fall off the map.

But who cares.

And yea. This could easily become a war.

Hmm. Time to drop this issue.

I never intended for this thread to be a flame-war, just people giving their insights as to why big name DJs become big and then flounder, when it comes to mixing, producing, remixing etc. I didn't create this for bashing of these DJs, as I really am not bashing them or hate them, just disapointed, largely by Oakenfold even more so than Tiesto, although I am starting to get a little disapointed with him as well....

What are you on about? Neither of these were ever good in the mixing department. It's more noticeable now though as it's easier to see past their playlists than it was in the past when they we're playing better music. On a technical front Tiesto and Oakenfold have always been a load of bollocks.

Well when I listen to their old sets and CDs, they were pretty damn good when it came to mixing, track selection and even producing. Well I will admit, Oakenfold sucks with production. Bunkka was horrible. I enjoyed Hypnotised for a little while...when it was first released, and the Tiesto or Gabriel & Dresden Remixes of Southern Sun. Tiesto in my opinion was great with production, especially with Gouryella (although that probably was largely due to Ferry), his remixes such as Silence, Flesh, Velvet Moods etc. His older productions were great too, such as Obsession, Close To You, In My Memory, Lethal Indsutry etc. His last album was a mix bag, some decent stuff (walking on clouds) and some lousy stuff (UR). But when it comes to the mixing, it seems like both have lost the touch. I mean Tiesto's ISOS 4 album had some great tracks, but he should have quality controlled it a little more. He should have re-thought the placement of the tracks. In some ways, I think Ferry Corsten has gotten better in the DJing department, and Armin has as well...but Oakie and Tiesto are just lacking what they once had.
