Gabriel & Dresden Houston:: Review

Sean hooked me up with the TA discount, & I got in at the pre-sales price of $10.

The club: It was chi-chi, without trying too hard. People were dressed up, but not overly so. I never had to wait more than a minute for a red bull & vodka ($7). The ceilings were a little low, lending a claustorphobic air. & the strobe lights were bizarrely disorienting.

The set: G & D started at 12:08. The first hour was okay--( an okay G & D set was still worth the drive). The crowd seemed to be liking it, but I just wasn't into it. I thought some of the transitions were just too long. I did some trainspotting with JBooty & Ryan. I was really happy when I identified a song coming in as Depeche Mode, era 1983. It turned out to be a very obscure song, "Get the Balance Right", which DM only released as a single.

Around 1:30, everything clicked. They threw on a new version of Kansas "Dust in the Wind", with a female vocalist. I loved it, cheeseball that I am. "TRACK OF THE NIGHT". I was happy, because groovetickets had said "9pm-3AM", & I thought "the show's half over, but the 2nd half is going to be awesome!

Wrong. Right at 2 am, they cut the sound, turned on the lights, &swept everyone out. I don't mind the club closing at 2 AM--it's a business. I mind the show being advertised as going til 3 AM, when it wasn't. I guess 2401 San Jacinto, where Freeland played til past 4 AM, spoiled me.

Other songs:
Beautiful Things
On a High
As the Rush Comes
Swing to Harmony

Dave said they were working on a new artist album, & their Kansas version will be on it.

Matthias, Daydreamer, Mavo, DigitalBreach, nice to see you!

I was waiting for the storm to blow over in Austin. The storm never blew over, it just stayed cloudy, so we just took off at 7:38. It never rained, but we saw a great sunset & a huge orange moon, & pulled into Houston around 10:45. So I missed most of the openers.

yea it was meh at that. think the venue was the problem. i mean im used to space to dance and see visuals and such. mantra just doesnt have that department covered. but i did like the track selection as usual. i think i may have wierded out dave cause i screamed to matt the first bar that i heard Alive come in and he just looked at me. could be wrong though. tracks that i remember...

trainspotted most of the songs but my memory escapes the rest. And wtf was up with that e-tard that was wanting them to play PvD as the last song and then caused that ruckus during the encore song??? Nice to see dave and josh spin yet again. just hope that you guys come back to texas again after what happen in houston. hope to see the pics up on gabrielanddresden.com soon. hopefully my stupid arse is in some of them again...

my review of the evening? well, seeing as how my birthday is next week, and mantra is full of ing tight s, i wasn't able to get in.
and from what i see of the track selection, looks like it could have been a blast. arcadia, fav song was played, so i missed out on that. and as the rush comes and zocalo were played, and definitely enjoy those.
it's too bad that mantra was so hardcore in not letting 18+ get in even my birthday was just missed by a week.

hopefully G&D, you guys will come back again to a seemingly better venue, when i'm in town, and have it 18+.
Zeonfiend
I don't suppose the G&D remix of "Dust In the Wind" had Sarah Brightman as the female vocalist, did it?:eyes:

hahaha....trust me bro, after gettin to hang out with him in Dallas, Dave aint much wierder than any of us on TA. I'm surprised I didn't wierd em out with some of my antics (singing along to instrumentals) but Josh found it hilarious and after a while started doing the same thing. I'd have to say the best part was when the percussion line to Persama - Swing to Harmony came in and was looped/extended, both you and I started singing the chopped up vocals 2 minutes before they even came on. "EY AH O EY!!!.....EY AH O EY!!" Yeah that was..lol, anyways. Good times

I am so glad my sister got to see this. Besides the PVD event in Dallas, NU NRG in Austin, this was the only other decent event she's been to.

Glad to hear everyone had a great time. :) Its also great to hear that G&D will be releasing a new artist album soon. Hopefully this means they will be putting out some new material. :D

First time to see them live. I came away thoroughly impressed (as expected).

2 questions---what PvD song did the dude want to hear and what time did they start?

It was more of a remake or cover than a remix. I do not know who the vocalist was.

& Zeonfiend, when are you going to make it out to a show??

Started at 12:08 by my (non-Swatch) watch.

I thought the show was a lot better than "meh". I thought the last 1/2 hour they were really on, it just took them a while to hit their stride. Sorry if my initial review sounded too curmudgeonly, I was writing after ~4 hours of sleep.

I liked the venue fine. The strobe lights were the only thing I didn't like--they were on a pulsing cycle that disoriented me even before I started drinking.

JBDreamerie--the club can lose it's liquour license if it serves underage. There will be other shows.

I completely agree that they were really hitting their stride late in the set. It is a shame the venue closed and we were hustled out before they could really leave their mark.

And just another reason to hate Mantra for these type of events. The venue is nice for just a regular night of clubbing but for G&D I think they deserved so much more. I had a fun night though. Only thing irritating me was I put my tab downstairs and the transition from G&D to hip hop was killer hahahaha. I just tried to grab my drink and run back up.
daydreamer
i had a great time.
started off slow, but it picked up 30 minutes into the set.

i was hoping my friend Lizandro would get to play,
things didn't work out for him.

c u guys at the next one
