probably b/c the circumstances are so unusual and seem to really indicate foul play. I mean, this is a person who wouldn't just disapear and not show up for work. As well, i think this wasn't a situation where they had a clue of what was going on, so they need as much help from the media and public as possible. |

thats my point...
this is why although its a sad story, i have stopped reading about, or watching any news items about this.
Im in the "let me know if they find her" camp.

but if you think about who else has gone missing in the last few months, it's usually eldery ppl w/ psychiatric problems, who, more than likely wandered off, this is definitely sad, and deserves media attention and assistance from the public, but i think in general, when ppl disapear and it is completely out of character, and it's likely b/c someone has done something heinous, it's going to get more media attentiom, i mean, when small children go missing and it's thought to be a heinous crime, there is always a huge media frenzy.
i'm not saying there is no racism in the media and that due to race, and class there isn't more media focus on certain types of ppl, more than others (jon benet ramsey vs other children murdered comes to mind) but i think it's over dismissive and simplistic to say that the only reason there is media attention regarding this disapearance if b/c of she is white and from markham. |

| maybe you are right. But at the same time the differences are glaringly obvious. Im not against the story being covered. And im certainly not against a huge search effort. But this story has the headlines every single day. I cant imagine how it must feel for those parents of missing kids or relatives of missing people who dont get coverage and see this. Same thing with that girl in Aruba. |

because she's been gone so long.
because she's not homeless or mentally handicapped.
because people know her.
because she's young and pretty and wealthy and a lot of people identify with her or know her. |

Jay, do you have any hard info on the number of ppl who went missing in the last year, who they were, what their stories were and whether they were found?
How many people actually go missing for a week without a trace and do not receive media attention? |

Actually i was watching a story about it last week. I think it was ABC.
They showed minutes of coverage for the girl in aruba and at the same time a foogly black chick went missing in minneapolis and she got roughly 1/100 of the coverage that the girl in aruba got. They even said that males get even less coverage in the media on average and backed it up with national averages of minutes covered per story. |
