Good job on the young guys part. I normally don't give to homeless people because generally there homeless because of drugs/alchohol. Unless i can tell they really need it. |
Yeah i dont give money really, give them food instead. A few times i've bought some guys a McDonalds breakfast and a coffee on a cold morning. Its not much but i like to think i try to help. |

At my Uni, part of our "jesuit" education is giving back to the community. My lit class was huge on this, as we had to give 20 hours of community service at some program in downtown. For me, it was St. Francis House, a catholic organization that fed the homeless and gave them supplies donated by others, like toiletries and tents. Big eye opening experience.
Also, since our school is so big on this, they invited Tent City to come live on our tennis courts for a month and we had to go on a tour of it. Afterwards, I felt pretty good about it becuase the people who live in these tent cities have a good thing going for them. There's no crime because they do backround checks of everyone who lives there, and they have a little security on the premises made uyp by people that live there. It's a good community. A lot of the people only live there for a year or two. Then my lit professor got some of the people from tent city to come to our class and have a class conversation with them, and they were pretty ordinary. Ofcourse, some of them had some issues, but nothing harmful. |

| i gave a homeless guy a $10 before. He told me "Hey man, I not going to lie to you. Can you please give me some money so i can buy some beer?" Honesty is the best policy :) |

I would give those people some money but the bums here always spend it on drugs and alcohol.
Here's some money. Now go buy yourself a tie! |

That's indeed a heart warming story, thanks for sharing :)
You know, probably we'd me amazed if we found out how many times things like that happened a day. Don't get me wrong, this was really a very nice act but it just goes unnoticed. You all in the bus stop saw it, but then you, with little more hope, moved on to your lives - if the guy had pulled a gun out of his briefcase, this could've made the news. I'd say people would gossip a lot more as well but we'd even tell one another when we see a benevolent act, as you've just done.
I'd say one of the reasons why the world seems like a big bad place is the media: everyday you hear of murders, deaths, telephone bills more expensive and whatnot. If for one day, the news decided to talk about the good things, such as what you had seen; if, instead of getting citizens alarmes, it got viewer's educated, I'd like to believe we would treat each other better and we'd gladly see acts like that more often, hopefully.
And then you say, "But Lira, that's a world of phantasy we'd be living in"... well, aren't we already living in one? Just happens to be a bad one. |

| i gave a street performer in Madison $5 once. For anyone in madison, it was Art Paul. That guy's cool as hell. Ask him to sing his song about the T-rex. |

It's nice to see people helping out, even if it's 5 bucks or a whole meal. Homeless people are humans too. Just because they don't have a bunch of money, Armani t-shirts and a ty Civic, dosent mean they deserve to be kicked in the face and yelled at every time you see one.
In North America, where some places are as decayed as much as South American cities, it's always nice to see people helping out others. I hate stuck up dicks and yuppies. It's so easy to help out too. 10 bucks out of your pocket once a week to somebody for a quick sandwich and a friendly conversation isn't that much to ask. |

| I gave a panhandler a couple bags of breakfast sandwiches once. I had just left a cancelled training meeting on an early morning and got caught at a red light. I motioned the guy over and handed him the 2 bags - like 12 sandwiches total. I think he ate 2 of them before I was thru the intersection. |

not such a heartwarming one, but:
i was leaving this club once, after seeing James Zabiela for the first time, so imagine the big smile on my face, its 5:20am and i am making my way to a cab, when this guy, dirty tshirt, all ripped, ripped up denim shorts, sandles, obviously quite poor, but just as well, strong, healthy, and in his early 20s.
they guy basically jumps in front of me. and says 'hey man... you know what, you don't look like no fool, so i'm gonna be straight with you. gimme about 30 pesos so i can get dizzy, so i can buy some and be done with this and go home.'
i was amazed at his forwardness, but i sure as hell wasn't going to waste money on some bum's drug habit. specially one who can surely get work. in any case, i have to go back into the club quickly to get this girl that was gonna split the cab with me. turned out pretty cool cuz back inside i got to meet James n stuff, 10minutes later, we leave, making my way to the cab again, and the exact same guy jumps in front of me, and says:
'hey man... you know what, you don't look like no fool, so i'm gonna be straight with you. gimme about 30 pesos so i can get dizzy, so i can buy some and be done with this and go home.'
the exact same thing, word for word, to me. apparently, he had forgotten talking to me 10 minutes earlier and was surprised that i ignored him. damn, that kid musta been hiiiiiigh... |
