Ulrich Schnauss doesn't make IDM...what's next, Airdrawndagger? I'll tell you what IDM is, IDM is basically ambient breakbeats, but everyone calls it IDM because the "IDM" label Warp releases a lot of ambient breakbeat matereal that people call IDM. So now if something is basically a breakbeat with a melody it's IDM. Hah.

Well, yes, I call Schnauss 'nearly IDM' :>

My IDM definition is pretty good. Like...stuff with erratic drum programming and...erratic everything. For example I hate most Plaid stuff, but occasionally they'll pump out a track like Silversum. That's the case with a lot of IDM artists like AFX, Autechre, Cylob and so on. It's mostly all crap with a good interesting track now and then. Artists with a higher percentage of good stuff I like are Kim Hiorthøy, Enduser, u-Ziq, and....Squarepusher!

I really don't think so, for example AFX ambient works, richard d. james album, druqks, all great. Most of BoC stuff is great, arovane's too. Tho' if I understood you right, you were saying that for example afx, has only couple good IDM tunes?
Aiwendil
Naw, just not liking stuff that sounds like this and calls itself IDM.

By definition: Intelligent dance music (IDM), is an electronic music genre which began as a style of techno in the early 1990s and moved on to include the textures and sound manipulation methods of Musique concrète and early, "true" industrial bands such as Coil and Nurse With Wound. Unlike the driving, pounding sound of dancefloor techno, IDM is more cerebral, and often uses much lower or much higher tempos than is found in dance genres. In general, it is more melodic, less aggressive, and more quirky and improvisational. It is sometimes informally called intelligent techno, listening techno, art techno, experimental techno, or braindance, a term coined by Aphex Twin's Rephlex Records. The genre was also known for a while as electronica, though that term now encompasses many forms of electronic music from big beat to acid house. - Wikipedia

However, as posted before, all it is really is another marketing thing. Another sub-genre of techno/minimal. Another subgenre of ambient . Either way, "IDM" owns you.

By the way, half the stuff listed as IDM on Discogs isn't IDM. For an example of what IDM is, click the link below:

That's what i'm talking about. Most of what people call "IDM" is comparable with other genres like ambient breaks or illbient, and probably are one of those. I thought IDM was supposed to be stuff that didn't sound like any other genre. But regardless, songs like this are much more interesting.
