Does anyone here use the ogg vorbis format for storing music? If so what do you think, is it better than MP3 and in what ways ...
bananas
well it takes less megabytes:wtf:

OGG is better than MP3 in virtually every way, end of discussion.
Smaller size because you can encode at a lower rate and still get equal if not better quality than MP3s, and it generally encodes with a more rounded sound, no butchered treble frequencies like MP3 does.

Only downsides I can see are that it takes more processing power to decode, and it's not yet compatible with everything you may want. But on the technical side, yes it's streets ahead of MP3.

No contest, really.

that and flacc I've found are very good formats, although they're underrated and nowhere near as mainstream to the general public as mp3 is unfortunately. now if mp3 player manufacturers come out with updated BIOS downloads for current and future players to play ogg vorbis format then all hell'll break loose in how many songs and how good a quality can be stored on them :p. :whip: :disbelief

Shhh, you're not supposed to let people know that there is better stuff out there besides mp3. You don't want to make the suits at Apple mad!

*sigh* fine. FLACC eats up a lot more memory than mp3 or ogg vorbis but the payoff is that (I think) you can edit that file a hell of a lot more readily than the other formats. I almost became a shill and bought an iPod shuffle. Then I found the joys of a Creative Labs MuVo Micro N200 1GB mp3 player. 100x worth more for the same price of a shuffle. ;)

OGG takes the best traits of alot of different formats and puts them together, you still can't play one on a club sound system without kids being able to tell that it is a lossy downloaded file though.

The issue with requiring more processing power is the reson why most portable devices can't play ogg files, they generally use as little CPU strength as they can get away with. You're generally better off archiving your music uncompressed if you can get away with it, if I had a need to put all my CD's on a hard drive I would use mp3 because I have alot of mp3 CD players and it would allow for faster tranfering to them, if I didn't have those I would use OGG.

OGG and mp3 are really close in sound quality comparison, nerds who develop the ability to sense "sound quality" are still not in agreement over which format is "better". This topic is really better suited for places like slashdot or those message boards where audio geeks hang out. If you are listening to trance music on computer speakers it doesn't really make a difference, use the format that is available and easiest for you to work with. If you don't like patents or subscribe to GNU philosophy, then ogg is the format for you.

good points. In the end it's whatever works for you to listen to wicked bitchen good trance tracks and sounds fine ^_^

OGG is a better format, from the standpoint of sound quality its just not widely accepted yet so there is little poing to using it because it won't play on much.
meneedit
OGG = Better Compression/Retarded Sounding File Extension
MP3 = OK Compression/OK Sounding File Extension

now if you'll excuse me i'm going to fry some oggs.
