i'm bored and daydreaming at work, so i pose this question to you:
would you rather...
a). be the #1 DJ in the world and play to packed clubs , but be considered a sell-out by half the EDM community for getting so big, a la Tiesto
or
b). be the #1 producer in the world and be revered by the EDM community, but be cooped up in your studio creating one kickass track after another
:conf: hmmmmmmmmm? |

| i'd probably take 2 to be honest. yeah it must be cool to be tiesto, but i'd much rather be a well respected musical genius making the best music ever heard :p |

| i mean, sasha & ferry are really the only ones tipping both scales here. But your right, there are serious extremes in this business... i don't see why someone would want one more than another |

Obviously both would be great. But if I had to choose and could snap my fingers and make it happen tomorrow, I'd probably pick #1.
If a DJ is spinning music he loves and happens to become mainstream with a huge following, how exactly has he failed? You're never going to please everybody, so if an elitist portion of the EDM community considers you a sellout because you are the most popular DJ and make the most money, why exactly should you care? If I am doing what I love, playing music that moves me emotionally and I'm making thousands of people happy every time I play a gig, screw the nay-sayers.
I could make an argument for choosing #2 instead, but the way the question was worded made #1 have the most negativity to it, so I decided to play Devil's advocate. :p I would love to produce trance tracks, honestly, but I'm just not that creative of a person. |

| probably #2 because it would be satisfying to hear top DJs overplay your tracks nonstop |

| i'd rather be revered for something i am than something i'm not |

i guess i didn't stress the negative part about choice b), that being you're cooped up in your studio, a hermit not interacting with the people you're making the music for |

| Who says a producer can't also go to clubs and hang out with the DJs playing his music? ;) Unless you seriously meant someone who never leaves the house... Yeah, I'd rather have a social life and go to clubs - or rather, be the DJ spinning the music while living the clubbing experience. ;) |

| Play the music I want, present it in my own way...and get noticed? |

true. i guess i generalize a producer more as someone who does their work around themself or a couple people, whereas a DJ does their work in a social setting--the club or arena |
