Trance subgenres?

Hello,
I'm working on a little sorting-project. I have loads and loads of trance in all the different subgenres (melodic/uplifting, progressive, hard, psy/goa, and so on). And I'm trying to sort them into the correct genre. I've used Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music alot, but there are still many artists/songs where I can't define what genre they are.
So my question is: Do you know a site where you can look up artists and see what subgenre they usually belongs to? |

This guy talks about music genres like he is god and yet he know nothing. With a guide like this the map if pretty much solid but I feel its unnessassery to voice his opions on the genres.
examples
Oldskool Rave
There was a sub-genre of this that split off around 93-94 that got really ing silly, with samples of children, cartoons and nursary rhymes'
I guess he is refering to trip to trumpton, and smarties but this was '92.
Brit House
Songs: Andrian - Beautiful Things & Trisco - Muzik <<--- WTF
Brit house, because if anyone could make house (trance?) this boring and monotonous, it's the British
Nothing like what he describes it as from what i recall Brit House was very uplifting included Chakra, mother's pride, armin - blue fear, agneli & nelson - el nino, bt - flaming june. Came right before the big trance tunes of '99 so between 96 - 98. Not 2000+
Epic Trance
Songs: Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky, Fragma - Everytime you need me, alice deejay - better off alone.
Nuff said.
Stupid House
'Stupid house (better known as UK Hard House for reasons unknown as it sounds neither hard not housey) is just retarded'
Well that really describes it well:rolleyes:
Songs: klubbeads - kickin' hard, lisa lashes - looking good, dj jean - the launch.
Well for starters klubheads and dj jean are dutch placing this 'stupid house' as dutch house and secondly lisa lashes - looking good was uk hard house, which progressed to become UK Hard Dance as trancy elements came through - but no definition anywhere is it stupid house.
I could pick apart this guide to no end and its hardly impartial or unbiased. The more i look at the map its actully starting look wrong. |

You know what, I totally agree with you.
I know that the guide is not 100% correct, and I havn't taken it 100% serious, but it gives some guidelines, I think. And about his comments, I don't like them either. He's very arrogant and so on, but I couldn't care less about his opinion on some trance-genres.
But forget that stupid guide then - do you know a site where I can look up artists and see what genre it is?
Or maybe another solution to my problem? :) |

also i notice.... (not that i am a great fan of 2-step garage)
Speed Garage
'aka THE WORST MUSIC IN THE WORLD. How did this music get past the censors.. Thos basslines sound like farting into a pillow'
Its definatly not the worst music in the world and when it came out it was new a fresh, deep rumbling basslines over timescretched vocals.
2-Step
'God this stuff is so ing boring.'
Nice to know what you (the writer) thinks of it! Don't think i have ever heard it called brit garage, uk g maybe.
and a lack of a mention of some of the newer genres ive heard of in the last year or so like scouse house/bounce :nervous: and grime. |

| Your best bet is probably discogs |

| Yeah...we should all take a look at raydn's guide to electronic dance music. |

| at least i wont have to follow someones (crap and flawed) guide :p |
|
|
| Aiwendil |
| You don't really understand the purpose of the guide at all, so how would you know whether it's crap and flawed or not? |

he is canadian, and it is inaccurate on purpose
I think a more accurate guide would not be in the sort of tree hierarchy style that ishkur has. Some other form of presentation that shows how genres spin off of each other would be better I think. The tree style makes it seem like one descends directly from another when they really were a much more complex process of people taking different things from different places and putting them together. I am not quite sure how it would be best to create such a diagram butI can't help but think that there has to be something better than the tree chart,
In the end every chart is going to have people that challenge its correctness, if I were to make such a chart I would emphasise that it was coming form my point of view and is by no means the way things are for every person in every place. One will have to make up their own categories.
Ishkur's chart is more of a chart of crowds that follow styles than it is of the music itself. He charts things by the patterns of the kids who follow a certain music then comes up with a name. One could make a completely different chart by categorizing them by common elements in songs, but it might not be a very useful chart for any purpose other than guiding people who are looking for a certain song or something similar to something else that they enjoyed.
You should think about the purpose of this chart before you make it, that will help you decide how it should be constructed.

what the hell are you smoking, armin is dutch, bt is american, not british house at all. There is a small measure of accuracy in this category because alot of that droning bring house was coming from british musicians. Not all of it though, there is a duo near me who also makes that sound so I guess it isnt necessarily british |
