hi,
I was looking at the korg MS2500R (rackmount synth)
And I noticed that all the new Korgs are dsp based synths
soooo.... should i simply forgo getting this and go with a vintage Roland synth on ebay? (something made in the 90's)
are new hardware synths really worth it or are they pretty much vsti's with dedicated computer platforms? |

Sure, the new hardware is great. Even the semi-new hardware can make some pretty decent sounds.
It depends what you want. The old analogue synths are far less versatile but they also each have a unique flavour that you won't find in any of the digital synths. That's why synths like the JP8080 or TB303 are so famous - the technology isn't that hard to replicate but the texture of the sound is defined by its distinctive filter circuitry.
If you want versatility, get a DSP-based synth - just don't expect that warm analogue sound from them. |

I'd take a digital synth over an analogue one any day. More precise timing, more midi control, less chance of them breaking and needing repair.
Hardware is definately not over rated though. Its fiddly and a pain in the arse at times, but you can get some great sounds out of dsp synths that you wont get out of soft synths (..and vice versa)
As for warmth... its over rated in my opinion. Most of the tunes coming out these days are pretty digital sounding. |
