How has nobody in any of the piano-related threads mentioned the BOSENDORFER???
That's what I used in my F&P remix. To this date I have not heard a better piano. The pianos that come with Kontakt and Hypersonic are *okay*, but it's nowhere near the same quality. |

Yes, the Bösendorfer by PMI released by East West (http://www.soundsonline.com) is DEFINATELY highly recommended.
Besides that, I would also try and have a look at The Grand by Steinberg, which will hopefully drop a bit in price with the coming of The Grand 2.
Other than that, if you didn't plan on buying a Piano VSTi, you can always try to look up some soundfonts of recorded piano samples. There are actually quite some good ones to find. SampleTank might also be a good solution :) |

i have used the bosendorfer and thought it was pretty good, can definately be used for making a convincing slow accompanying piano line, but it lacks much realism if used as a standalone instrument. (call me picky, but i am an ARCT trained piano player). |

So am I. We can't possibly be talking about the same Bosendorfer. The one I'm talking about is 2.5 GB, 24-bit, with 4 velocity-mapped sets for both the pedal up and pedal down, and another set for the release. It doesn't get any more realistic than that.
There are a lot of crummy imitations of the Bosendorfer, but don't be fooled. You'll know when you're listening to the real thing, haha. |

^ thats pretty cool then, two arct trained musicians from southern ontario both into EDM, i woulda never thought lol
this is the one i used, the standard one i think you mentioned.
i guess after comparing it to sampletekk - the black grand it doesn't do justice for me.
compare 4 velocity switches to 48 :eyes: that basically ensures that you'll get a slightly different tambre each time you hit a note.
check out the demos...

Looks very sweet!
How does it compare to Steinberg's "The Grand"? |

You mean blows out "The Grand"?
I don't know, I rather wait for The Grand 2, of course I'm using Hypersonik , I just combine 3 piano presets, do some tweaking and then Roomverb presets (Ballad Piano for not so wet piano sound or Big Piano Hall for a nice spacy piano sound) and then I apply Izotope Ozone 3 with the preset Piano Treatment, and voila!!! perfect piano sound.

Looks cool, but that definitely ain't it. :p
The Bosendorfer I've got is from Bardstown, and it's just a sample, not a closed VST/kompakt/intakt/etc.:
http://www.bardstownaudio.com/frames/CD-Bos.html
So I just converted the samples to Emu format to load into Emulator X, to take advantages of its patchcords, disk streaming, etc. Also, it's technically 9 samples per key - 4 for pedal up, 4 for pedal down, 1 for release.
I checked the link you posted... they may claim that it's 48 samples per note, but that's completely impossible - a regular 4-note chord would then require 192 voices of polyphony! No DAW could possibly support that, so I'd imagine that it must have "hard" velocity mappings, whereas the Bardstown uses crossfading so it actually uses all 5 samples at once (4 based on the pedal + 1 release), as well as a velocity-based filter.
I'll definitely check out the samples on that page though, it does look pretty sweet and may very well be better than the Bardstown (and similar price). |
