hmmm jlosada, i know the gun swamper is referring to...but i can't find any links for it atm :p:p:p

anyway, it some sorta electrical, multiple barrel gun that hasn't got moving parts (hence the electrical bit)...so it shoots lots of bullets very fast!

not sure why it's ballistic, i had the idea this meant the projectile travels in an arc (of course they all do, but in terms that it is not aimed directly at the target), but i'm not sure

well, if i do manage to find an article i'll post the link :):):)

Inventor: Mike O'Dwyer
Came up with idea in the 60's, but only patented it in '93, when he quit his job at Woolworths to pursue his dream full-time. He started a company called Metal Storm (which floated in 1999), with significant R&D funding from the Pentagon and the Australian Defence Department. He now owns 47% of the company and is worth about $234million (Aus) - not bad considering all products are still at prototype stage.

O'Dwyer's gun has no moving parts, the bullets are stakced in the barrel with explosive charges in between. It uses electronic impulses to sequence bullet firing with such precision that 180 rounds can be fired in 1/100th of a second (thats 1080000rpm!). In terms of its potential effect on warfare the gun has been compared by some commentators to the development of the machine gun in 1862.
Products under development include the O'Dwyer VLe handgun, an advanced sniper rifle, hybrid weapons incorporating both mechanical firing and Metal Storm technology, an "area denial" system to replace anti-personnel mines. Other applications for the technology are foreseen in agriculture, firefighting, and fireworks.

Am I missing something here, or could someone explain why you're all so interested in big bad -off million-round-a-minute machine guns all of a sudden?

Are the Aussie TA's all gonna single handedly go and sort out East Timor or invade New Zealand or something?
