I've been asked to do some remixes but I don't know how to do this; at least not profressionally. How is it usually done?
Do we both sign a contract?
Who gets payed what?
How long does it take for a remix to get done usually?
How much does a person usually get paid?
My "name" is not famous at all, so how much $ should I ask for?
What if it ends up on a label? Am I able to realse the song also?
What about the rights to the song?
What if they end up not liking the remix?
.... and I'm sure I'm still missing something... |

Do we both sign a contract?
dont know!
Who gets payed what?
depends on contract :P
How long does it take for a remix to get done usually?
from 2 days to a month, how much time You have?
How much does a person usually get paid?
not much, unless Your name is Armin!
My "name" is not famous at all, so how much $ should I ask for?
look above!
What if it ends up on a label? Am I able to realse the song also?
repeat the question in another words please
What about the rights to the song?
You get none! since it is not Your song
What if they end up not liking the remix?
then change the melody and make it to Your own tune! ;)
Peace! |

1. No , basiclly ur Remixing and getting paid if the lable chose you to remix then u setting up a price , some lables dont pay for remixes , But if u got any future releases on this specific lable the artist u remixed the song for will remix ur song in exchange...
2. u getting paid basiclly if u were chosed to do the remix , sometimes if ur offering to remix and people know ur sound and stuff they will ask u how much u charge...
3. depends yourself. if u like the remix and think its good enough for the lable , u give it away , if the lable likes it u get paid. since the payment comes after u done the remix...basiclly ofcourse unless its advance.
4. about 200-250euros , thats the minimum unless the lable offers u a deal , but i wont be rude and ask for that much since im aware to my level of production , you'll get high paid if ur producing on a high level...same goes to low.
5. For a Start , i dont think u should ask for a payment since if u want to "Spread" your name , ur basiclly the one who's ASKING to Remix , and then if u did a good remix other lables contacting u...of course if ur remix was included with the package.
6. if the lable thinks ur remix is good , they will ask for a SOLO material from u and will wanna help u develope as an artist. basiclly it ends up with 2 singles (A and B Side).
7. You get none! since it is not Your song
8. Then ull have to know ur not ready yet , unless u think u got something better to offer OR they can ask u to change specific things in the song like EQing or changing the melody's sound etc... |

themohawk - no, they currently aren't signed... that's the main reason why I'm not sure what to do... I guess it would be whaterver we decide then? and whatever it is we decide should probably be in writing...
WinterWave - thanks for the tips!
Pillow One - thankyou! the person that asked me is currently trying to get signed so this will help a lot if he does. By the way, I saw above & beyond a few months ago at the circus in Hollywood, promoted by Spundae. Great show!!! |

Sure, thats something that you and the artist you`re remixing has to disucss. If you dont trust the guy and are afraid he might fu*k you over, if he gets his works released on a label, then yeah...(!) wirte yourself a contract saying whatever you feel is necessary to give you the credit for the remix-work.
But I dont see why someone would fu*k you over like that, when they are trying to get signed. Because if they get signed, and a guy like you comes along claiming that you did the remix thats also been released(and can prove it), that wont look to good on the artist, and the label will start asking questions!
But its always good to feel safe, so writing a contract could be a good thing for you to do, since it seems like you`re kinda nervous something will go wrong!? |
