Filling up the tracks

I notice that most tracks that are made have a lot going on at once, but it all fits together. I'm wondering how you producers get everything to fit so well and not have a production sound so "on beat" if you know what I mean. I'll give you a little sample of what I mean although it might be overexaggerating a little.

I know you can add like cymbal crashes and some background ambient sounds or something, but for me sometimes it just seems like it doesn't fit together all that well.

first thing i noticed; sample quality. ditch the FL sounds for some nice wavs (the ones freely available on the internet are good enough). when sounds are too thin, layer them with all sorts of stuff, but don't overdo it. you'd definately need percussion in that track; off beat bongos will help break up the 8th beat grid-snapped feeling. proper compression and eq will help you get the most out of your sounds. there are all sorts of tutorials that can help you out. just look for them and read up. good luck.

No that was just a bad example. I never use FL standard sounds. I have started layering sounds such as layering my kicks, 2-3 leads together but you know what I mean by getting rid of that "grid" feeling. Anyway around that? I'll send you a piece of my latest track that I want to get far with because I think it has potential I just don't have enough working with production yet (3 or so months).

Something tells me that no one can help me on this? Or that it probably just comes with mor experience.

I don't think there's really a 'theory' to fill up your tracks, I think it just has to come by experimenting, trying and practice. Just be patient (nobody's gonna be able to do it for you), it'll come :)

sounds like your asking two questions...

- how to make things sounds as though they flow naturally

- how to create a fuller sound

First questions... I would say that its a matter of going in, turning off quantise and actually moving the notes around till it has a more human feel to it. I also noticed your suffering for a bad case of trance gate-itis in that clip. Gates are great, but if they are used on your main lead, then they can very quickly make it sound quite robotic. Either lower the wetness of the effect or add enough delay to make the gate less obvious. I've been using a lot of gates lately, but more to produce a tremelo effect rather than actual chopping of the sound. Used that way, they can be pretty effective. Another method is to patch filter cutoff or pitch (albiet a small ammount) to the velocity and adjust that for each note to create more of a 'played' sound rather than a 'triggered' sound. Not every note in a melody should have the same importance and velocity will help you assign this in an easy note by note way.

Second question... Try adding more synth layers. Copy the same melody and use a different patch. I find using one for high freq and one for lower freq can help thicken the sound. You can also try moving the melody down/up an octave to create a fuller spectrum of sound. Good dynamic synth programming will also help. Assigning envelopes, lfo's etc to various parameters will help make the synth seem alive. Its not always about having a 'full' sound, sometimes its about getting movement in the dynamics of the sound.

And practice, practice, practice =)

thank you and that's what i needed :)

I'm actually not using a gate at all. It's how I arranged the notes.
