800 killed in Baghdad bridge stampede 17 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least 816 people were crushed to death or drowned in a stampede on a Baghdad bridge triggered by fears a suicide bomber was among vast crowds of Shiite pilgrims massed for a religious ceremony.

...

Most were trampled to death or fell from Al-Aaimmah bridge into the Tigris river as panic gripped thousands of pilgrims from an estimated one million attempting to make their way to the Kadhimiya mosque in the north of the city.

There you have it, proof that religion does kill people:(

Ever heard the story of Noah's Ark? Now THATS proof!

Yeah it's aweful. Religion clearly should be abandoned by everyone :D
Chris Larkin
To be fair, it wasn't the religion that did the killing, it fas the fear factor that any massed gathering in Iraq is going to cause. It probably wasn't Idea Of The Year 2005 to have this festival go ahead, but it's not as if you can blame these people for wanting to continue tradition.

Mind you, the 'insurgency' must be having a right laugh - they launched three mortars at the crowd, which got them edgy, but didn't do much, and before you know it, you've got potentially a 1000 dead, without loss of terrorist lives. Oh well...

Isreal kills also, i guess we should ban that also.

Funny thing, this never happend before, i heard this is yearly event and this is the first time that it happens.

Guess we can blame America for this. You see there were no saddamists or zarkawsits before. whatever the words should mean

napolean, hitler, stalin, saddam, kim ill sung, milosevic, hedeki tojo.

all these secular rulers. they have killed more people than any other religion. note, the supreme court regards atheism as a religion. religion is just another word for, "lifestyle". if you get the logic, we all have a religion. mind you, it doesnt have to be anything organized or involve diety worship. just your lifestyle.

Take any ruler from before 1800 and you'll find that he/she was a religious person. Then look at all the cases of genocide back in the days, and you'll see that religious mass murderers still outnumber the secular ones.

Yes, well, don't get me started with the list of religious rulers who started wars.

No, religion is not a synonyme for lifestyle, it does by definition have to involve a deity.

And if the supreme court really regards atheism as a religion then id say its about time someone took them out of their misery.

and i think you will find that those dictactors used a religious angle in thier killings, Hitler murdered the jews for example so those deaths were brought about by thier religious beliefs because hitler did not like that religion.

Fact is that religion is the single biggest killer throughout history and has also been the biggest cause of pain, suffering and misery.

Actually I thought disease, famine, and starvation were the biggest killers, causers of pain, misery, and suffering. And those are all non-man made too...

not really, ever since man walked the earth and had different beliefs from another man and started to have gods, it was then one mans god against another and then the killing ensued.
like the holy wars and crusades of the middle ages to the terrorist actions of today, all brought about by religion, ppl suffer needlessly because thier religion demand it, take jevoh witnesses for example, not allowd to have life saving blood transfusions because it is wrong of thier religion, the amount of roman catholics that had to suffer because of unwanted childbirth because thier religion says they can not use protection, roman catholic women who have been raped, not allowd to abort thier pregnencys because thier religion forbids it, how women suffer in the middle east because thier religions say the male is superior and is allowd to do basicly what he wants, how women and men are killed in iran because they are gay or lesbian, all against thier religions.
Asian indian religions where women are forced into arranged marriages etc etc.
the disease and famine you talk about is also caused partly by religion, in some 3rd world cultures you are considered rich if you have a large family, so you have all those mouths to feed and are unable to because of a religion, Polpot (sp) killed thousands in cambodia because of religion.
even world war 1 has underlying tones of religion that caused thousands of deaths, 9/11 and 7/7 in the UK, the gazza strip, the constant battles that rage there, all down to religion.
With the exception of natural disasters, i am sure you could find religious overtones to every war between the ppl of the planet earth.
