Hey Guys, gettin 17 inch rims for my civic within the next few weeks and so will be needing it lowered.I wanted coilovers because i wanted to be able to adjust the ride height to exactly what i want.

My question...
Ive seen coilover kits for my car advertised from £55 to £3000! so what ones am i to go for? if i got the ones for £55 (theyr on ebay by the way) is it all i need to lower my car? why is there such a price difference between them? will they both do the same job?

Heres some of the ones on offer for around £50-£60

What do u think of these? would they be suitable for me to buy then?

im afraid incase i bought these and went to the mechanics to get them installed that he'll say that im missing something, and that he cant fit them etc?

Any help appreciated!
Thanks!
Sean.

First of all, why does it "need to be lowered" because you're getting 17" rims? The car will still work fine with our without being lowered.

To say it plain and simple, no do not buy these cheap coilvers. Here are some reason:

Lowering your car on stock shocks (struts) is never a good idea, it will lessen the life of them and they'll blow a few months down the road.

Those ebay coilovers are designed to fit 3 types of cars and various generations of each. Spring rates should be different all each of those cars and I'm assuming that these coilovers are one set rate. The spring rate on those coilovers isn't even listed, another huge reason to stay away.

If you do it correctly and spend a bit of money then you won't have to re-do the mistake you're about to make. To lower your car correctly I would suggest spending no less than $600 USD. Omnipower makes a fairly good coilover kit (strut, spring and sleeve) for around $650 USD but a design flaw has recently been discovered.

Personally I'm lowered 2" on Koni "Yellow" sport shocks, Ground Control Coilover kit (1-4" adjustable), Ingall camber kit and Ground Control upper pillow mounts. After a professional alignment the car rides smooth as hell

Thanks for the reply. When putting 17" rims on a 98 civic hatch the suspension is raised big time, ive seen this happen many a time, and the the whole car looks like its on stilts,so obviously it needs lowered.

The first pic of your black integra shows the car unlowered, mines will be worse than this as my suspension is already raised (standard civics have high suspension).plus it will make it look 100x better to create that street racer look.c'mon, anyone who modifys cars has to lower their suspension according to rim upgrades!

So those ebay ones just sat over the standard strut, sleeve and shocks? to do it right u need a whole new shock, strut, sleeve upgrade then?

Can u recommend a brand/make that would sell a good set in the uk and at a good price? cheers man!

lowering springs are just stiffer aftermarket springs that utilise the cars existing shock absorber. You will experience a drop in ride height and slightly harder ride and stiffer handling.

In order to utilise the most out of the spring, you're best off buying a complimentary aftermarket uprated shock absorber. This will give you even better handling and more stiffness etc.

the creme de la creme of uprated suspension is to get coilovers which are an "all-in-one" suspension unit which includes a special shock, complimentary springs, and pillowball mounts. Coilovers are adjustable which means you can adjust the ride height yourself whenever you like, which you can't do with shocks and springs.

Coilovers are generally more expensive than shocks and springs...since you're from ireland you can access www.demon-tweeks.co.uk and see that springs are cheapo at like 40-80 quid and shocks are a couple of hundred quid. Whereas coilovers start from around 600++pounds.

On my 200SX i have Tein Flex coilovers which come in at an eyewatering 1150 pounds

To reiterate what everyone said don't buy cheap coilovers!

On my car i use Tein Basic Coilovers. They give you height adjustment but not the stiffness adjustment that the SS series has. H&R and JIC also make good coilovers.

I have mine at around ~2.1 inches lower than stock and NEVER bottom out because they have a shortened body. I don't know about your car in particular but I also purchased pillowball mounts for my struts to make alignment easier. That was an extra $150 or so.
