Setup for Mixed Soft and Hard Studio

I've been doing some reading on EM, Tweakheadz and a few other sites about integrating a hardware mixer, hardware and software synths and outboard effects in a DAW environment. Tweakheadz recommends having as many audio ins on your DAW as possible. The idea is to be able to record simultaneous tracks, right? Right now I have a 16 channel 4 buss mixer and a couple of sub mixers, various synths and grooveboxes, an 8 channel MIDI interface, Speedio audio/midi interface, and would probably use the effects from either my Kaoss Pad 2, Nova II or Virus.

Can anyone give me an overview on how I could best set this all up. I also use softsynths with EnergyXT as my host application. My Speedio USB audio/midi interface only has two audio ins and my PC has SPDIF and line ins but it is a cheap AC97 card. I seem to be reconfiguring all the time!

Would it be good to have line patcher or more audio ins on my PC?

Thanks

having many in's and outs is only good if your gonna mix your tracks down on hardware(which is good), but if you are running a sequencer and all the mixing can be done internally then dont bother with all the ins and outs. Another fact behind having many ins and outs is if you want to use hardware fx/tools on separate channels. Like having one channel on your mixer as a compression channel, so you can send audio out from your sequencer to that channel on your mixer and you it only for compression. Mainly if your just running synths in to your mixers and lets say some reverb and delay units then you should be alright with the ins/outs you have.

Thanks Limiit. So recording through multiple ins would just be a time saver in my case rather than a necessity? I see what you mean about needing it for hardware insert effects though. So far, most of my creativity has been spent learning to design sounds and creating trance type riffs and melodies, so I am still a mixing and mastering newb.

well most reverb and delay units can be set to the send and return channels of your mixer and can be used on every channel, so I dont want you to missunderstand me in that way. also another plus of having multiple I/O's is that you can pass each channel through your mixer and mix/eq/effect that way...its all personal preference...I dont go that route right now but once I get a bigger board I will for sure as I have a Delta 1010 with 10 I/O's. All my Consoles inputs are taken up by synths right now, so all my mixing is done digitally within Cubase. I'm a huge Analog fan, so whenever I can I'll go analog.
