8 hour drive later and I am back home in Santa Barbara after a mind blowing weekend in Sin City. Luckily, I had the fortune of having pre-sale tickets to Oakenfold and Haliwell at ICE last night and boy was I happy. First off I want to thank the new ownership group of ICE thats made the building into one of the best clubbing atmospheres I have ever experienced. The lineup was Mark Stylz from Open -> ~1:30am, Oakenfold from ~1:30 -> 3:30, and Eddie Haliwell from ~3:30 -> Close. I got there at about midnight with my friends, ready to dance. It was my first time at ICE so we got a bit confused at first as we went in the side entrance for will-call tickets and that put us in the lounge with a hip-hop DJ. HMMMMMM... I thought it was supposed to be trance/house!! Never fear, we finaly discovered the fantastic dual-room setup and started getting down to business with Mark Stylz on the decks.
Stylz played some sweet breaks for most of the night, the crowd at first took a bit to warm up to the music but soon the place was going pretty crazy. I think the ultimate point(s) of the night came when the overhead smoke machine started spewing smoke into the crowd (it was hot as hell in there so the cool smoke felt sooooo good). Rather than just setting down a hazy layer of smoke in the room, it went full throttle, sending blast after blast into the crowd to the point that it was white-out conditions. You couldnt see your hand or anybody else, but the music came through loud and clear. I loved it and so did the crowd. They did this multiple times during the night and it made everyone go CRAZY!!!
Oakenfold kinda snuck onto the decks IMO which was cool, just kinda looked up and he was turning out the choons. This being my first time seeing him, I was rather surprised at how ..... short... he is hehe. You could barely see him above the decks!! I have never been good with track titles and identifying them right off the bat, so I apologize for not being able to provide any of those details. But I CAN say that he played alot of classics from the good-ole-days. Lots of stuff from 1998-2000, including Southern Sun, which absolutely ROCKED. I wish I could name off more tunes, so you can get an idea for what a great job he did. I know a LOT of people knock Oakenfold and say how much of a skeleton of his past he has become. Because of that I was a bit leary going into the club based on what I had heard, but I think he did a great job of getting the crowd going and into the music.
When Eddie Haliwell stepped up, I couldnt wait any longer. He was the one I really wanted to see and I am disappointed I left halfway through his set (I was too damn tired and I could barely stand/walk). His scratching was absolutely amazing. It blended so well with the beats and melodies. My roommate made a comment that I would tend to agree with to an extent and that is that Haliwell's tracks were a bit repedative. I didnt mind it all though because at that time in the morning I was too dead to switch beats to dance to!!
All told, Sunday night at ICE replaced Saturday Night at RA as the best clubbing experiences I've had. Not bad for one weekend in Vegas.
Moral of the story, if you are going to Vegas, love to club, and there is a good DJ in town playing there. BUY YOUR TICKETS AHEAD OF TIME AND GET YOUR ASS OVER THERE!!!!! |

er, stylz is in teh hip hop room, Michael Fuller was the opener for oakenfold. His sets are usually just too progressive and undancable for me to get into, which is kinda why teh dance floor remained empty for a teh first hour er so. the back by the bar was packed though.
i was really disappointed that eddie came on last, I was hoping to see him first then leave, but instead I had to sit through some oakie first. Luckily I was right next to the booth and could lean on it the whole time. I was alos surprised that he beat matched, and didn't do the jesus pose. he also played a lot of boring type progressive/trance at the start and moved into some older trance which got the crowd going.
and then there was eddie. the reason I came.
yea a lot of the techno he played is repetative, but you have to appreciate wtf he was doing back there. there were a few times he had 3 cds playign at once while he would be messing with the effects. he made the build up in each song sooo much bigger, it really got the crowd going. and his scratchin is top notch also. He would be switching the cross fader with his left thumb and three of his fingers.
i stayed the whole time (til 6:15), talked a bit with Eddie's brother afterwards til teh security kicked us out :D. hopefully they get him back soon. and everyone I spoke to said he blew oakie out of the water.
i also met the owner from heaven there, hopefully he gets eddie out there. I should be posting pics later...and maybe some vids. |

I so happy a happy when I find out Eddie play after Oake, Because if Oake play after Eddie, the party will end early. He make Oake look like nut....:-) He play more than 3hours and the crowded keep saying one more, and he keep playing unstill 6:15. I went with the group more than 50people, none of them see Eddie before, All they can say this guy is really realy amazing, anyway he is my top 5 now.
Nice to see you at Ice Boomer |
