Shure E3C and E4C comparision

Im about to drop some money on a new pair of canalphones, and was staunch about scoring the E3Cs(E5Cs seem way too overpriced for my usage). But Shure decided to release a midrange model between the 3s and 5s, the E4Cs.
In comparing these two, I've decided that the E5Cs weren't a factor, so my parameters were:
1. How much better sounding are the E4Cs vs the E3Cs?
2. Is the value of the Shure E4C sigificantly better than the E3Cs relative to their performance?
All in all, is it worth it to dish out an extra 120 dollars for the E4Cs assuming that they sound that much better than the E3Cs? Or are the E4Cs a waste of money, relative to their performance over the E3Cs?
Thanks again. |

dJohn,
The difference between the E3s and E4s is going to be subjective. I've been using the E5s for 5 years for Djing and have loved them. But when I tried the E4 out, it was a minimal different for the lower priced product...I was surprised. I now gow back and forth. Both the E3 and E4 only have a single driver, but the E4 has a new type of driver with the balanced armature and tune-port technology.
The E4, compated to the E3, have the bass that most Djs looking for. The E3s, albeit clean throughout the frequency range, didn't have the low end punch I personally needed. Although I know some people who do like it's low end punch...I've hard stores from bass guitarist who love the E3, which surprised me.
In the end, you should try to check them out and hear them for yourself. Depending on what type of Dj you are, you may want more low-end, or be happy with the detail mid-highs in the E3s. Most Djs mix off the low kick...others off the high hats (more hits per beat to mix off of). There are a few Dj stores and pro-audio dealers that have them in stock and should have demo pairs for customers to try out.
Not sure if this helps...but lemme know if I can help with anything else. And glad the word of mouth I started on on these is finally spreading.

Isn't using in-ear phones a problem when DJing and you want to remove them and check the speaker sound quality?
I like to mix in my headphones, and occasionally take them off to check/enjoy the room sound.
My impression is it's tricky to get the in-ear phones inserted properly so you don't want to be removing them too often, however I don't have good ones and maybe the better ones are easier to insert/remove. |
