The Talismanic Weekend Review

Wow! What a weekend. I was planning on going out to see Hernan on Friday night, especially after the good reviews he got for his show in SD, but I thought it wiser to relax and get a full nights rest prior to Sat/Sun/Mon.
First things first, I went to Armin's In-Store at Virgin Records at around 5ish. Armin showed up about two minutes after I arrived and the room quickly populated itself with about 30 or so onlookers, many with posters, CDs, and T-Shirts for him to sign. Armin looked viscerally exhausted from his travels but was still in good spirits enough to entertain the crowd by playing for about 30-40 minutes, after which he took another 20-30 min. to autograph things and chat. I saw a good number of familiar faces there, including DaveT/Michelle, Technofrik, Sweetcandy Girl, Raphael, Lex400SC, and Maya. Armin was a good sport about everything, infact he was one of the last people to leave the area. Myself and Sweetcandy Girl walked with Armin and his group of 3 down to the parking garage before he made his way back to this hotel and eventually to Nocturnal. Afterwards we head over to Blowfish for a bite and run into none other than Buchnaner! Small world.
Later, I get to the club and AJ is playin in the main room. I was in and out all night long but by the time Markus came on at midnight, AJ had the room nicely packed and ready to hand over to Markus for his set. Markus played his usual stuff and seemed to have the crowd eating out of his hands everytime I poked my head into the main room. I had a
chance to chat with Markus at length and was completely impressed with his approach to music, being a DJ, and his personality in general. He seemed like a top bloke and I particularly enjoyed hearing his views on new technology like Ableton and his new artist projects on the horizon.
John came on at around 2 sharp and mixed right into Markus' final track. It was a track I've never heard before and it slowly transitioned the vibe from Markus to John without being excessively jilting. As usual, John's set conisisted of a hodge podge of stuff that I've never heard before, combined with the usual JOOF staples of Astrix (Fire) and Prodigy (Narayana, Alex Stealthy Remix), SvD's AKA, etc. John did a good job of transitioning the mood of the room into what he does best, and pretty much did a flawless job of vibe enhancement as one could do in a two hour set. He ended things with Bulletproof's 'Painted Love' (The track that sounds like a Psy Trance version of Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love') and the place damn near erupted. The crowd at Circus was amazing on Saturday! The guy who is always meditating with his eyes shut, looking at the floor with his hands in his pockets acutally came up and shook John's hand - and to top things off, I even saw a smile on the Light Nazi's face!
All in all a good performance by all of the main room DJs. AJ deserves a lot of credit for filling that room up. His tracks hit the nail on the head. Markus and John did well to keep things going. Another magical night at Circus. Saw a good number of familar faces at Markus/JOOF including but not limited to Sweetcandy Girl, Buchnaner, KittyKrush, Technofrik, Bob, Gil, GPC, Rich, DaveT, Michelle, and alot more.
I got about 4 hours of sleep until I had to wake up to run some errands. I met up with Lex400SC and Maya and together with Gypsygirl we all began our trip to SF. Got to the City at around 8 and grabbed some cocktails and pizza before heading to 1015. I was thorougly impressed with the changes that the people at the club had made since my last visit there at the end of May. The waiting area/lounge upstairs was decorated nicely and the area in front of the main room even seemed to have a better vibe.
The main room opened up on time and we actually made it in on time. My only gripe of the weekend is that the guy who opened up for John was all over the map with this trackselection, which was creating a strange vibe in the room. John arrives soon thereafter and mercifully relieves his predecessor at around 0215am, and then proceeds to spend the better part of the next 4 hours laying down some seriously sick magic. Dark, enlightened, shaken not stirred, unapologetically in yer face, proper as - bangin trance. The way it oughta be.
He starts his set off with SBK's 'The Nightfly' and then weaves his way through the next 4 hours with one of the more relentless and pounding sets I've ever experienced. Loads and loads of tracks that I've never heard before, including Bloodhound Gang 'Foxtrot Charly' (M.I.K.E Remix), and others that I wish I could ID. As before, we heard the usual JOOF bread and butter staples of Astrix and others interwoven through the night. I've seen better crowds at 1015 over the years, but John always seems to get a fantastic reception up there, and this time was no exception. Got to see alot of old friends at 1015, including a few I hadn't bumped into in 5 years, which was great.
Around 3ish, Christopher Lawrence comes over and says hi to John (just like the May 1015 set). The two of them had a brief chat, and then Christopher hung out for a bit and shot the breeze in the DJ lounge. He seemed in good spirits after his Nocturnal set.
After the show we all ended up at breakfast at Lori's on Mason. John was in his typical comedian form.
Question: So what exactly is Psy Trance
JOOF: Well there was this bloke named Cy, and they said...'Hey Cy, whats your favourite Trance'? And the tracks he replied with later became known as Psy Trance.
All in all another fantastic weekend. Definitely not one I'll forget anytime soon! :) There's loads of video from the Circus event that I'll be editing together this week. I'll throw up the link when its done.

| I spent my Saturday night with about 20 of my closest friends at Spundae. We initially went for Markus not having been exposed too much to Flemming in the past. WOW were we impressed. Let me just say for all of us that Flemming was the highlight. He banged it out just like we like. Our night suddenly got alot better come 2am. We will always come out for Joof now. A DJ not to be missed and very underrated. |

okay, let me just start off by saying that i am so glad that hypersky pushed me into finally seeing jOOf! after seeing all the amazing djs on saturday at nocturnal i truly didn't think that i could see a better dj set, boy was i wrong! the trip up to san fransico was pleasant although a bit fast following lex400sc:) then we get there with plenty of time to eat and have quite a few cocktails at a funny little lounge that played unusual music, we thought the dj was a homeless person who came in off the street, how funny to watch him walk behind the decks.
then we get to 1015 and chill until the main room opens, nice enough place with what seemed to be chill people, just spoiled b/c we have circus down here, happiest place on the planet! the first dj goes on, taj, and as some of you know and have seen, i have a problem sitting still, i can't help but dance but i just couldn't get into this guys set, seemed like one long song over and over. he did drop shivers but after seeing armin the night before, the guy had no chance with me. maybe it was just a bad night for him.
then we see john come in, he had a smile on his face that instantly infected everyone. hypersky introduces me to him and he warmly greets me and then proceeds to stand there and talk to me for atleast 10 minutes: asking me about nocturnal and me asking, what i am sure were stupid questions but he patiently answered my questions and made me laugh with his silly humor. then he gets behind the decks and that's when the magic began! from the first track to the last i don't think i could have stopped dancing, i tried to sit down for a minute or so just to rest and dry off and then bam! he would drop another banging song and up i would go, he would look at people in the crowd and totally connect with them, smile at them and dance with them behind the decks. watching him, as hypersky has put it, is like a religious experience and i totally agree with that!
while talking with john i had told him how excited i was that armin and christopher lawrence were on the same stage at NW for about 5 minutes and that they were 2 of my favorite djs and john was like, chris will be here later so you can meet him, so i'm up on the high rise dancing and of course i see chris come in. john and chris warmly greet each other and then once john was back behind the decks he looks for me and waves me down and tells me chris is there to go meet him:eyespop: what a super human being, he wanted to make sure that i got to meet one of my favorite djs. i can't get over the movements and perfect mixing and just the sheer energy this man emmulates from up there. i can honestly say i have not seen a better set by any other dj yet!!!!!! i still love armin, cl, tiesto, pvd and several more, but they need to move over, there is a new dj god and his name is jOOf!! i will go see him every chance i get and tell everyone about him. now i understand what hypersky has been saying all this time, jOOf just gets into your very soul and creates this amazing feeling as you watch him and dance to his music.
then to end the most perfect set ever, jOOf sends his handler home and goes to breakfast with hypersky, lex400sc and i and chills with us and cracks some of the silliest jokes ever. we laughed all morning long. what a true and humble human being and what an absolute honor it was to meet him and see him spin!
i don't want this to sound like a school girl crush, it's nothing like that, i don't want that from the dj's i see, as i told john, i want them to connect with the crowd and make me dance my ass off!!!!!!! that is what i look for and that is what he gave me and then some!!! i would like to think that many of the big djs are like him in spirit and mind and i have a feeling that some are but i have been infected with the magic that is jOOf and i look forward to many more amazing nights experiencing what he does!!!!
yours truly a new jOOf convert:p |
