500,000 ecstasy pills seized

By AP

The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement says that in August agents seized a record 500,000 Ecstasy pills worth about $9.9 million U.S. near the Michigan-Ontario border.

The bureau is trying to find the sources of Ecstasy smuggling at the border, said Brian Moskowitz, special agent in charge of the Detroit office.

Ecstasy is a synthetic drug considered part hallucinogen and part amphetamine. It became popular because of the energy and euphoria it gives to users, but it has harmful side-effects and can damage the brain.

Canada is the major supplier of the illegal drug to the U.S., says Assistant U.S. Attorney Karl Overman.

"Canada is where they make it," Overman told the Detroit News for a story yesterday.

Among two relatively recent cases:

On Aug.12, customs inspectors stopped a couple trying to cross from Canada at the Algonac ferry crossing and found 100,000 tablets under the rear seat of the car.

On Aug. 1, a Windsor, Ont., man tried to enter the United States at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and was found to have 94,000 Ecstasy tablets near the engine. [QUOTE]

Wow doesn't suprise me, a Montreal woman got caught with her BF in Miami with 30,000 E pills and that's just one person.

The US gov. is stupid, they banned E for no other reason than they didnt know if it had bad side effects or not... It was "too good to be true" so they made up a report full of lies about what it does and got the Gov. to declare it illegal.

And ya, i'm NOT making this up... ABC News did a special on it and talked to countless Neurologists and Pharmacists etc... I think you can watch the special on pot TV, which sounds like an unreliable source but ya it's a real documentary by the REAL ABC News, big mind opener for all you ravers.

Why are you harping on the USA? This happened in Canada.

Not to mention, you're completely wrong about this. First of all, I would take anything I hear from ABC News with a grain of salt. But in any event, MDMA was banned by default because of its relation to methamphetamine and other amphetamines. The anti-drug laws have a very broad clause stating that substances which are "related" to banned substance are by definition illegal unless approved by the FDA.

Now IMO that law is also bull, but this idea of "they banned it because they didn't know how it worked or what side effects it might have" is ridiculous.

I tend to agree with you...however...it is true that there is no scientific evidence to date that suggest there are any serious side affects. Now that may be simply because no long term studies have been completed in order to see what the affects are.

Why the "however?" You're right, current research indicates no side effects (other than the potential temporary depression). I was just saying that the reason it was banned had nothing to do with side effects, real or speculated. It was banned because it was a derivative of other banned substances.

Buddy Dignut, you claim my statement is ridiculous yet you cite nothing... Please provide proof as I did.

If you have the actual law in front of you, please post it!!

I posted what I saw on an ABC News program, since that's what I had to work with.

As far as I understand it, MDMA was first invented by a German scientist who earned the patent for it, he didn't know a good portion of it's uses and later on the drug was MASS PRODUCED LEGALLY in the USA by a man who was using it to treat people. And according to speeches made by Ronald Reagen and DEA officials in the USA there was no mention that I remember of it being banned as a result of it being a "derivative" of another substance, HOWEVER... I may be wrong given I only have one source :)

I guess I should have worded it differently, since the DEA scientists DID IN FACT INVENT SIDE EFFECTS and TESTED DIFFERENT drugs, and recorded the symptoms of THOSE drugs as the symptoms of MDMA, that's why I was harping on the USA... And they were even caught doing it, simply because other chemists and physicians stated quite simply that most of the USA's proof was wrong and very tainted.
