Problem playing DVD's on computer...

I have Realplayer (the free one) on my computer and it used to be able to play DVD's perfectly well but now when I try to play them they don't work properly - the sound plays but no picture comes up, just that default black Real background thing. Any idea what's going on? Or are there any better (free) options for DVD playback, since I tried to get them to play on WMP but it said I need a decoder, and they apparently cost money.

In case you're wondering I've not had a PC for long, I'm used to a Mac where you put a DVD in and it loads "DVD Player" and it's that simple.

The Windows Media Player should work.

Well, my problem is that it doesn't, and when I go to help it says I need to buy a decoder for it to work... I don't see why I should have to, I paid for a computer with a DVD drive so I'd like to just be able to watch them.

Usually the DVD drives come with software to watch DVDs. Some video cards also come with it. I believe once the DVD player software is installed, the Decoder should work for Windows Media Player as well.

I am currently having problems with a Pioneer DVR-110 drive I just got today for my PC.

It plays DVDs but the audio and video both come out choppy and stuttering. I'm running an Athlon XP 2400+ with 1.5GB of RAM, a Radeon 9200 (128MB), and a Audiophile 2496. I don't have these problems when running DVD files, only when I run from the disc. This happens with both commercial and free ware. Any suggestions?

Did you set the region code on your burner? And are you playing "burned" DVDs?

I sorted out my problem... found a free program called VLC, it does the job :)
