backup solution for a small network

Yo dudes,

My dad's recantly set up a business which contains a network of about 4 computers.

2 laptops.

2 desktops, 1 of which isused at reception. the other acts as file + print server.

I was thinking of setting everyoine up with a network drive on the file server. They then save ALL their docs onto that drive.

Then as back up i just backup the share drives (which are all on the one machine).

Any suggestions?

I Presume your talking about backing up the Actual Data e.g Spreadsheet's, Personal Documents Etc and Not Actually OS Data e.g Drive Imaging. Firstly your going to have to look at cost's and volumes, If you have lots of Data to back up each week say 10-50Gb + I would recommend that you use a TAPE Drives But from what your saying I think its around 1Gb a Week ? If So I would Add a 100-250Gb Hard Disk drive into your main Server and Partition it and give it a Volume name such as BACKUP etc, If the HDD fails then your screwed unless you add a DVD/RW with 4Gb Media and do it that way ? I guess it depends on how valuable the data is. Its un Common now that Hard Drives fail but i presume there a lots of tutorials on the net. GL.

yeah, it's just the files .. xl + docs etc..

i've got a 20GB tape drive.

no point in backin up operating system in my opinion. why reinstall an operating system which was at the point of toppling over?

cheers dude.

the tapedrive could work, or u could get an external backup hd.. one of those fancy where u just (physically) push a button and it starts copying.. my bro has one of them..

How about RAID1? You could have 2 HD with the same info, where everything gets saved simultaneously. If one fails or crashes, you have the 2nd as backup.

pretty much RAID arrays or tape drives...

Raid 1 and tape on a semi regular basis.

Tapes should be stores in fire proof cabinet and ideally off site.
