Just out of curiosity, what would it cost to rent a really small place? Perhaps the basement in some old lady's house or something along those lines. Oh, and how much are utilities on average?

You can rent the trunk of my car for $50 a month. It'll be like your own mobile home.

Garbage on Tuesdays...

Ok but it may fly off on the highway...

But seriously, my gf's friend just rented a room in the Winston Churchill and Eglington area for $450 a month. She can even smoke weed in there!

for a decent place with some privacy (re: non-shared facilities, clean, non-ghetto area, etc) I'd say about $700-800 in and around the DT core...somewhat less outside of it.

there are some gems out there, you just have to look for them...i'm moving back to toronto in the spring so i've been scouting ads just to see whats out there and i've seen quite a few basement bachelors and one bedrooms in the downtown core with private entrance,washer/dryer,a/c, utilities including cable and wireless internet for anywhere from $650-800...some people prefer being in an apartment building but most of your apartments in houses are all inclusive which saves lots of $$$...

other than searching ads online and in the paper you can find a part of town you want to live in and just go for a walk through the various neighbourhoods along the side streets and you're bound to find houses with signs outside advertising an apartment for rent...i used to live in cabbagetown and just walking along the streets there i was constantly seeing signs for apartments...some people do this rather than place ads...

craigslist.org lists quite a few reasonable apartments

toronto star has a good listing as well

My bachelor with a loft in cabbagetown (carlton/sherbourne) was $650. Included utilites and we had free cable. We had a deck upstairs, and all of my neighbours rocked. I got drunk on the patio every weekend. They're might be vacancies... pm me if it sounds good, 'cause I think I still have my landlandy's info.
