And does anyone know if you can go under the knife (as such) again after an operation?

Actually, come to think of it, I'm sure you could, provided you have enough lens (I can't believe I forget the proper name of it) left to cut and reshape...

i was 23 when i got it done... i think you should at least be in your mid 20's if you're thinking of getting it done, b/c your eye doesn't stop growing

i think you can go under the knife again after an operation. i heard there's a new procedure out now which requires no knife? not sure...

No knife? What do they do? Use an actual knife?

I believe that a laser does all the work now, no knife involved.

The original procedure required removal of the transparent membrane on the outside of the eye for the laser to be able to reshape the cornea.

I believe the reason why they did this was because there might have been unknown differences in the thickness of this membrane, causing a change in the actual placement of the laser beam due to differences in refraction.

I could be wrong, but that's the explaination that makes the most sense to me without being an expert, so for that to be true, they must have figured out a new way of measuring such things and factoring them into the aiming of the laser beam making that cut unnecessary.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that also make all the post operative care unnecessary as well? No eyedrops and no excessive drying of the eyes?

Maybe I should rephrase my initial question...

Porky said: i heard there's a new procedure out now which requires no knife?

(I'm too lazy to quote)
I assume he means no laser when he says "no knife" since laser surgery inherently means no knife, but rather a laser to do the surgery.

So when I say "no knife" in reference to laser surgery, I really mean "no laser".

So really, my actualy question about "no knife" should really go something like this:

If you can get laser surgery again after you've had it once before, how do they do it exactly? Is it with a laser again? If Porky says there's no "knife" ie no laser, how exactly do they do it?

My sister had it done by some guy on King St. in Toronto....He uses lasers, she didn't feel a thing, and was able to do what she wanted like a day later. She was practically blind and now she sees perfectly with no contacts or glasses. And it was

I've wanted to do this since i was 16, and my eyes arent even that bad, -2.5 on both sides. But regardless, i will wait at least till 30 (8 yrs from now) for a) the price to go down, b) my bank account to go up, and c) the technology vastly improoves and there is more info on long term side effects.

this thread has been really interesting and is getting me thinking about doing it again

Very informative thread.

Id love to get laser surgery but have been told I should wait until im a bit older. The only people I knew who have had it were in their 40's so its interesting to hear a younger generations viewpoint on it.

Also can we please post pics of ourselves in our awesome frames? I had an abundance of wicked ones! bahah

Hmm.,...never noticed this thread before...glad it got bumped. I have VERY bar eye sight. -5.5 in one eye and -5.25 in the other. I've been debating about Laser Eye Surgery, but am completely terrified. Especially since they don't really know long term effects yet...and I am only 21. Not to mention...I've seen it on TV and stuff, and I'm really scared of surgery. Ordinarly I would have them put me out, or close my eyes...but in this case you can't. So does this mean you can see everything the doctor is doing and are forced to watch?! The thought of it makes me want to cry.
