ok I was thinking of gettin a pair of monitors. I am totally clueless on what I should be looking for. I don't want to spend that much, but I want good speakers.
How good are powered monitors?
Can I use monitors for everyday listening? (like if i have em hooked up to my computer, etc)
Do I need an expensive amp for unpowered monitors?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Get some monitors you like the sound of, and compare them to other monitors they have in the shop.
I use passive monitors, but I know that active powered monitors will give you clearer and a more accurante sound image. But on the other side, passive monitors with a hifi amp might give you a more comfortable sound to listen to as the amp will colour the sound.
If you go for passive monitors get a NAD amp :)
I have a pair of Tannoy Reveals (they are really cheap) and I'm incredibly satisfied with them. Impressive sound and great value.
Check out this link from the Sound on Sound forum, I think you will find it interesting.
