Good surround soundcards

Hi,

I'm looking for a good surround-enabled soundcard. So far, I've looked at Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX, it looks pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks, ;)

Don't have experience with that specific card from creative labs, but i had a Soundblaster Audigy myself for a while.
Nice clean sounding, mostly lacking in the latency department for music production.
This is annoying if you wanna play a VST instrument with a midi controller keyboard or someting. They do promise latencies up to 3ms i think ... but this will kill your CPU.

For watching DVD movies, playing audio etc it's great , can handle an almost unlimited amount of DirectX streams en has onboard surround FX... nice.

The latency will only occur when using the Audigy's MIDI channel, right?
What if I connect my midi controller through an USB interface, lets say M-Audio's Midisport.. Will there be any latency when playing a VST instrument with my MIDI controller?

Thanks :)

The latency is in the ASIO driver. It has nothing whatsoever to do with where your MIDI data is coming from.

Personally I don't find that the Audigy cards have any worse latency than the M-Audio. I find what it's lacking is good I/O. If you're only using software then it won't be a problem, but if you've got any hardware, it's really not great for recording.

how about creatives new x-fi line of cards? anyone have experience yet?

I'd recommend RME, supreme audio cards. And of course with surround support :)

Or else an M-audio, haven't seen any of their surround cards actually (do they even have them?)

I wouldn't buy the audigy. too unreliable, too expensive compared to other brands with better drivers/features.

Isn't there anything I can do about the ASIO drivers? Becuase I really want this card, but it is very important that there won't be any noticeable latency, because i will do live performances.

Thanks

Just curious, why do you want that audigy so badly?
djyouth
Because i'm getting it from an immigrant backstreet dealer that has lots of 'special discounts' and 'great deals with the manufacturers'.
I can have it for $10 if I promise not to tell anyone, especially police, because then he may get a lot of customers and run out of stock, he says.. :tongue2
...

Just joking. I want it because i've read a lot of good reviews about it, and because the store i'm buying from doesn't have M-Audio and RME cards. And because it looks good and has all the I/O's I need.

But is there anything I can do, like upgrading the ASIO drivers or something?

Thanks, :)

no... but listen to this, there is a project... the kx project, which makes drivers for the audigy card too. These actually make it able to use the audigy to it's fullest extend, unlike the original drivers from creative (!!!). I guess that gives you glimps of the professionalism in driver programming at the creatie department. I *personally* would disrecommend creative any place anywhere anytime. I've only had trouble with their cards, and too much others have the same experiences too, especially compared to other cards.

I suggest you find a good audio story in the neighbourhood, any good shop must have M-audio, and probably RME too.
If you stil would like to get the audigy and you notice the original drivers don't work to well try the kx drivers... Their interface is pretty much , but it is way better. If that still doesn't change a thing you're better of with a different card and you'll be put back 100Euro more at least.

Consider that this is a rather one sided (and my personal) point of view. Good luck
