any advantages, preferences, biases for using rotary knobs instead?

when i think about it, seems like it'd be a bit of a pain in the ass to do quick movements on the rotary knobs unlike the linear ones.

I think linear caters better to trance & techno DJ's, which is what I started out in, than moved out and into House. Now although there are transitions within the house genre that you might want to mix quick... with a rotary I feel like Id have more control and much smooooother transitions. Personally I like long transitions, and those are hard to pull off with a linear mixer.

rotary knobs equal control. control is good hence the reason why the rotary preferance. Doing long silky smooth transitions is a lot easier with a rotary mixer. I own the xone 92r and i have to say that i love it and wouldn't have gotten anything else.

well, haven't tried a rotary myself, but i'd imagine how you can pull off the smoother mixes...

one other problem arises in the scenario that you loveee your rotary, but have to get used to playing on linear at clubs, since no clubs i know around here have rotary faders.

my 2 cents!

LOTS of clubs have Rane MP-2016's, old style rotaries. And many don't have any eq's!

Love my Xone92 and my Rane. both are sweet!

Ill be getting the empath rotary myself as I only need 3 channels at the most plus it will be easier to bring to gigs. It really just depends on what your needs are cuz as sweet as the 92 is, it might be too much if u need to bring it to gigs etc.

Im not looking to be a mobile DJ, but in any case, if I do decide to do a few mobile gigs to make some change, the Xone:92, although flashier, has the same dimensions as the Xone:62, which I own, and there shouldnt be a problem fitting it into a DJ coffin, if I decide to get one.

Well im not talking about being a mobile dj, some djs still bring their mixers to clubs at least for backup reasons.. Ive needed mine b4..

But if you think that its your size then there really isnt any other comparable mixer. Empath Rotary for 3 channels, Xone 92 for 4 channels (w bells&whistels), V6 for premium installation ($$), Rane MP for budget club setup.

just check ebay every once in awhile and sometimes there will be one up. i was just reading the boards and thinking of which mixer to get. figured not to spend so much for a 62 or 92 since i dont really have a club in my house and ive used a 62 for many months (borrowed a friends) i decided to check ebay if anyone was selling a 46mk2 and there it was... and i won :)

Being in NYC, most places usually have a pretty decent setup - so Im kinda lucky, but I wouldnt put it past myself to bring it in the event that I need to.

from the clubs i have seen in the new england area, the primary mixer is the rane 2016. essentially, getting all these toys so you can be familiar with it at a club setting isn't wise, in my eyes, because a mixer is a mixer and so all of them have basic features. You never know which club will have what either. The only thing a dj should be aware of how to do is mix without puting the cue for both channels on at once. Meaning mixing with channel a one one headphone and channel b on the main speakers system.
