MEXICO CITY -- Ruben Omar Romano, the Argentine coach of Mexico's Cruz Azul soccer team kidnapped off a Mexico City street on July 19, was freed Wednesday.
Officials confirmed that the 47-year-old Romano had been freed alive in what local media described as a police raid on the eastern outskirts of the city.
Several kidnappers were also reportedly detained.
Romano had been forced from luxury car by five armed assailants and abducted outside his team's practice facility in southern Mexico City.
Romano took over a struggling Cruz Azul last December and guided the squad to several weeks atop the Mexican league.
He has coached several clubs in Mexico, where he debuted as a player for the America team in the late 1970s. |
