Apple mp3 players have a few distinct flaws right off the bat. First of all their bateries are internal so when it starts lossing its charging ablitiy over the course of a year or two (three if you're lucky) then you will have to pay Apple well over a $100 just to open it up and instal a new battery in it.
Creative Zen Micro's don't have this problem since you can change the battery yourself if need be. (just as an example)
My other beef with Apple mp3 players is that they run off a hard drive rather than flash media storage which makes them a lot more likely to have internal problems with moving parts, and also while highly unlikely, leaves them vaulnerable to skipping under extreme conditions (agian not likely given the buffer they keep on them but still a possiblity with any harddrive). This is just one more thing that can go wrong after your warrentee ends which will leave you f*ckered.
besides that, their pretty cool. |
THANKS Nusty!!!
Thats the kinda advice i was looking for- my knowledge of those things is somewhat limited to what I can read on the manufacturer's websites- thus not very helpful as far as cones are concerned.
And as for the student discount- i wish I could get it but... not a student anymore- have my UofT student card still... |

I wouldn't go for Ipod nano just yet. New product very slim design ....bound to have a few probs with it. Specially hard drive issues. I used to have a Ipod and i got so frustrated with the HD issues that i ended up selling it. In short i had problems with playing AAC files and i later found out that i needed to get Ipod updater and update the firmware but whenever i tried to install the updates it just kept shutting down on me.I know of quite a few ppl who have had similar problems and even one tech support d00d from apple told me that they have alot of complaints about similar issues.
Product of choice for now atleast for me is either Creative ZEN series or Sony Network Walkman series which is avilable both in hard drive and flash memory versions. I myself however are a bit more interested in Creative products cos few of friends have them and they have had no issues what so ever. Going shopping today for one :D |

i was under the impression tha the iPOD Nano doesn't contain a hard drive, rather it's flash memory based

| Saw the nano myself in a store the other day and it looks so damn sweet. So small yet so sexy, prob gonna hold out till Xmas to get one but for a 4gb it was only like $299 which isn't so bad considering the size. |

i bought iPod mini when it first came out.. for about $290..
i didnt have much problems with it.. except the itunes software was a pain in the ass to use.. especially all I ever use is winamp..
one of the features that i hated, but got accustomed to, was the way the files were stored on the ipod itself.. it is not a copy and paste process.. and the files are not sorted in custom directories.. rather they are stored with id3 tag info such as artist/songname/album/genre.. and it HAS to be stored with itunes.. (i found a way around it.. but was too late)
another thing i did hate, however, is the fact that there is no lost/stolen insurance.. which is a total bitch.. cuz my ipod got stolen about 3 weeks ago.. and all apple says is that "You should report it to the local law enforcement".. what a bummer
so i would totally agree on spending another $300 on an ipod nano.. its pretty sweet and small.. has tones of features.. but i would rather wait a while.. atleast until they have some type of insurance against theft/lost ipods..

Do any products have this kind of insurance? You even pay extra on cars for this. |

Hahahah I'm not sure if this is supposed to be immensely sarcastic but I laughed anyway. |
