Carl Cox Review -San Diego

This was my first time to the new House of Blues in San Diego. I called the box office to find out what time Carl was going on. They didn't know but they told me they had a curfew @ 1:00 am. Don't believe it. I got there @ 9:30 and was one of the first 50 there. Sucks because I had friends at the house that I left partying. Should of got there @ 10:30 or 11:00 like I always do.

The club is nice and the sound was fine. On the loud side but that was ok. I have never been to a HOB but I would imagine they are all pretty similar. No in and out privileges though. Plenty of bars abound to keep me stocked with Stella's all night.

Evil Nine opened and did a good job building the vibe. Carl came on and blew the place up. His sound was more of a funky house than techno. There were even a little breaks. The club filled up nicely and folks were really enjoying it. What was nice there was plenty of room to dance and dance is what me and everybody else were doing. Carl looked like he was having a blast and was mixing (cd's) like a witch.

Overall a really, really fun night. But today I am paying the price.

Hurting. Not sure if I can make it out to Max tonight.

Nice, I am glad he played a great set. I really liked his Mixed Live CD, really tech housey. ;) I will be looking forward to seeing him in LA tonight. :eyespop:

I still have not come down from that experience Thursday night. Carl played the best set I've heard from anyone all year! Saying that he owned it is such an understatement. He annihilated the place! Nothing but choice tunes all night and the mixing was flawless of course. I got there a little after 11 and he'd been on since 10:30 and already had the place movin pretty well. Then he drops a bootleg of Blur's song 2 and the place went nuts of course. From then on he just kept climbing and I almost when he brought back Faithless "Insomniac" (Armand van Helden mix)! I haven't heard that track in ages and it sounded sooo good. His set wasn't all techno but it was all Bangin'! I thought the sound was good but could have been EQ'd better. I think this was the first DJ event at House of Blues SD so maybe they haven't fiqured it out yet. That venue is really cool though and they did a great job last night. The DJ booth or stage was amazing. Carl had his own sound system up there with a triangle of 6 monitors facing him. These were full on loudspeakers though, not some little mackies. He had more sound up there than you see at most parties. He was rocking 3 CDJ1000's and a Pioneer DJM-600. No vinyl at all, just 2 full size CD books laid out. Carl has the best stage presence of just about any DJ I've seen. He dances and moves around the whole time, hypes the crowd on the mic, and always looks like he's having more fun than anyone else in the room. Of course if I was making the kind of money he gets, I'd be smiling alot too. But you can tell that this dude is really working and not just playing tracks. About 30 minutes into his set, I felt I had already got my money's worth ($27). The only odd thing for me was that I didn't recognize anybody there. I felt like I was in another city or something. The only person I recognized and had ever met before was Carl himself. I met him again outside as he was leaving and he was cool as hell. Got this souvineer...
