Ontario easing wine rules

Caught this article in the Star. 1% kind of seems like a joke.
"KITCHENER — Ontario wineries have temporarily been given the go-ahead to put as little as 1 per cent homegrown grapes in their wines and still qualify as made in Ontario, because of this year's severe domestic grape shortage. Richard Brennan reports."
I've always been under the impression that Ontario wines used 100% Ontario grapes but I guess the norm has been 30% and they are projecting 85% by 2010. Maybe I'm the only one that didn't know this, just seemed kind of odd. Fooled by the term "made" I suppose? |

| I knew this, but I remember it being 5%. Either way, I was shocked when I read it before, and needless to say, will not be buying Ontario wine in the future ever again. Why do I need to pay 20 bucks per bottle of "Canadian" wine, if 95% of it is wine that costs 40 cents a litre from Spain? |

Its to protect our local economies /producers.
If your a wine fanatic, chances are you wouldnt be drinking Ontario wine. |

| it's ok...you can still look for Ontario wines carrying the VQA distinction as they are still be required to be made 100% from Ontario grapes. |

| VQA must be why I thought they used 100% Ontario grapes. Just seemed odd calling something an Ontario wine with 1% Ontario in it. |
