Just to keep it simple and straightforward:

my objective:
to know what soundcard will be sufficient for the use with the following:

I have a m audio radium 61.
I will use it to control reason.
I also want to expand to hardsynths.
I am gonna buy a jp8080.

What soundcard should i get to be able to have enough in/outputs/whatever else is needed to use the setup above? Will an EMU0404 be enough?

Just to clarify... is this how it would be hooked up?? :

1) with just softsynths:

[Radium61] midi-out ----> midi-in [Soundcard in PC with Reason software] lineout ----> [monitor speakers]

2) with a hardsynth:

[jp8080] sound-out ----> sound-in [Radium61]midi-out ----> midi-in[Soundcard in PC using Soundforge to monitor the sounds I make with the jp8080]

Really need help understanding how it is hooked up.

Would appreciate any advise and clarifications.. please don't flame =>

you'll need 3 different connections

jp8080 sound out > PC sound in
radium midi out > PC midi in
PC midi out > jp8080 midi in

or another possibility is (radium is usb driven controller):

jp8080 sound out > PC sound in
radium usb > in pc
pc midi out > jp8080 midi in
jp8080 midi out > pc midi in.

this way you could record the knobtwisting.

You will also find that Reason will not control any hard synth, just it's own.

You'll have to rewire reason into another sequencer (fruity loops or cubase, etc) if you want the best of both worlds.

thanks that couldn't have been clearer.. but now with regards to the JP8080 Sound out --> PC sound in, how many inputs do i need in my PC soundcard to support just about any hardsynth?

we're talking about the red and white RCA connections here yeah??

And another thing... why is the JP8080 midi out and in going back n forth with the PC? doesn't the synth hook up to the Controller at all? how do i get the controller to control the synth then?

sorry i'm a bit BLuR!

Every synth will require you te have 2 mono inputs or 1 stereo input in your pc... so just multiply those numbers with the amount of synths you want to connect to your pc.

About the 'Jp8080 midi out > pc midi in' thing:
Every knob on the jp synth sends out midi data when twisting them. if you have made the connection mentioned earlier this data can be recorded by your sequencer (e.g. Cubase, logic). If you play your song this midi controller data will be sent back the the synth and will make your knobtwisting audible on the spot.:)

Also this way you don't have to search for the appropriate controller number as the synths sends the controller data out on the right controller number anyway.

So basically any professional/semi-professional soundcard shld be able to support my intended setup? Just to further clarify, will a EMU 0404 or EMU 1212 suffice? or a Tascam USB-122 (the external one).

I'm having probs deciding on a soundcard coz i'm afraid it won't be able to support my future needs, but I'm much clearer on the rest now, just need to decide on which model to buy.

Once again, thanks alot!

Do most of the standard soundcards have many stereo inputs? like EMU and the Tascam mentioned above?

I recommend you to search the internet. This is information which is really easy to find yourself.

The other option is to buy a external mixer insted, I picked up a Tascam MM-1 mixer for about $150 australian dollars ($100US) which allows me to have 10 stereo hardware synths hooked up and all run into one set of inputs on my soundcard.. you also get +40db of gain on each channel which in the case of the Jp-8080 which is always quiet is a huge help!

trying to find a soundcard with 10 inputs will be costly!!!

Thanks for the info guys!
Appreciate it...
