| I don’t think anybody really knows a thing about this guy to really start the flames. For all we know he could be a closet liberal or Pat Robertson in cognito … :conf: |

Really not much to flame. It was damn hard to mark the guy during his hearing, even though he didn't necessarily shy away from his previous court opinions. I'll flame him later as needed if he starts making political rulings rather than Constitutional ones. We'll just have to wait and see.
Any predictions on Bush's choice for tomorrow? I'm thinkin' Janice Brown - gives him a woman + a minority, which might help his image since Katrina. It'll help him fire up his base, plus he can overrule the likely filibuster from the Dems. in the Senate and effectively have the Senate run just like the House.
Then again he could slip in another Roberts - someone who's hard to read, has very little track record, and has a smile that makes even my thighs quiver..... |

Would be pretty hillarious if he turned out to be a closet liberal. Considering Bush nominated him though I highly doubt it.

Souter was nominated by GHW Bush ... these sumpreme court justices sometimes work out in mysterious ways. |

| The only thing that suprises me is not that he got confirmed, but that they gave him the seat of Chief Justice, instead of making him a regular ole Justice, considering his age. |

Earl Warren and William Brennan were nominated by Eisenhower, and they turned out to be quite liberal. Byron White was nominated by Kennedy and he dissented in Roe Vs. Wade and also wrote the majority opinion upholding Bowers Vs. Hardwick (in other words he was very conservative).
Speaking of O'Connor, she originally joined the majority in Bowers Vs Hardwick, and overruled herself some years later in Lawrence V Texas.
So yeah, there's nothing to flame because nobody knows what Roberts will be like on the court, but I would not expect Judge Roberts to be any less conservative than say Anthony Kennedy.

It doesn't surprise me at all.
Historically Chief Justices have been picked from outside the court instead of elevated from within the court like Rehnquist was.
Antonin Scalia has neither the personality nor the temperament to be chief justice (plus he's quite old), and Clarence Thomas lacks the intellect.
Roberts, from Bush's perspective was a no brainer for Chief. |

Only time will tell, and considering his age, there will be alot of that. :p |
