REVIEW: (sick) (sick) nite with JOHN B @ Republik Niteclub (09.28.05)

oh nelly ..! Projek Wednesdays at Republik is fast becoming my one of my fav. nites in this city.

it's been a while since i posted a full review .. so this time around i thought i'd give it some proppa. For the last half of this past summer, numerous mid-week parties have been springing up throughout the city in an effort to provide partygoers or people who are simply dulled by the seemingly endless workweek with a chance to escape and indulge themselves into something enticing. Enter Republik's Projek Wednesday nights. Drum & Bass in the mainroom with breaks & turntablism upstairs in the DSR. As with most other mid-week parties cheap fuel ($3 domestics Bud & Blue) before 12 AM.

I arrive shortly after 11 PM and make a quick entry inside courtesy of Charlotte and good old John TREO Tang. Cover is usually about $5 on a resident night and $10-15 with a headliner. Walk into the club and immediately captured by the atmosphere of the crowd. Unlike many jungle/drum & bass nights , the ghetto-ism factor is far less present and i tend to find that these nights definately bring about a much 'cleaner' feel so to speak. advanced appologies for sounding ageist but the 19+ factor is always a nice feeling too. Anyhow, so i head to the bar with a friend and immediately grab a cheapy beer. as i'm taking in the sweet beats of Prodigy's Voodoo People remix by Pendulum, i look over to my left and lo and behold is the ever so eccentric John B chillin by the rear bar. after some brief pleasantries exchanged he makes his way up to the stage and much to everyone's expectations and delight begins laying down a sweet trancey drum & bass set. For those of you looking for an easier integration into the drum & bass sound who are traditional 4x4ists, def. check out the sounds of John B. Many like E2EK1EL may consider it the "bhattier" side of dnb, but personally i think it offers another dimension into what is a very unique genre. Not to mention that it brings about the ever so lovely dnb ladies who can dance the outta most chicks u'd see at a trance/house event.

Sadly Norway's Future Prophecies were a no show this evening so I make my way upstairs to the DSR to take in some breaks. The DSR is always a nice place to hang since everyone's always in a chillin friendly vibe. Miss Michie on the decks dropping some sweet beats as well and easily by 12:30 am the place is going off from all the cheap fuel!

Had an amazing time and danced my arse off ever so not slightly. Republik by far is one of the best venues in this city for drum & bass. The sound system is absolutely bomb for this kinda sound and the lighting & visuals add a very nice touch to what is normally not a very common element at most dnb parties. The high ceilings of the club also make for excellent circulation and there's always plenty of dancing space to bust ur move.

Shouts to DigiiiiiiNutSlut for popping his Republik cherry. Told ya it was worth making the trip out. And sorry if i missed catching you girllovingtvibe .. got ur msg a little late. and to all the other TOTAz in tha house, i hope u all had as much fun as i did. Time2Burn, Stilez, DairyQueen and tha_broad.. shame on vous!

So if you're bored on a week night, wanting to try something different, and looking for a sweet spot, u'll usually find urs truly at Republik on a Wed. nite, future Projek nights permitting.. :D

Oh wow. Didn't know that's what he spun. Personally, I love the fusion of the two - Dieselboy's The Dungeonmaster's Guide is one of my all time favourite albums (especially those remixes of Dumonde and Tiesto at the end). Will keep my eye out for this guy in the future.

I'm kinda sad and glad to hear Future Prophesies didn't make it. Sad that you didn't get to see em, glad that I didn't miss them. :p

the wednesday night jungle parties @ republik are great but i wasnt feeling john b's vibe.

i found him to be pretty much trance with a jungle beat. I felt that the residents were much more entertaining this time around.

hopefully though we can make these wed nights a weekly instead of a monthly thing. Id like to see more proper DNB nights in Toronto. Im not the biggest fan of the genre, but it's fun none the less.

Nah, really only a handful of tracks were like that. He also played lots of dirtier tracks and a ton of electro-ish tracks.

And he dropped American Girls near the end of his set, which was the most important thing for me. :D

Gotta say I love that sound system for D'n'B - I can actually hear something other than mud. Vocals weren't always super clear, but I usually can't hear them at all in places like the Guv or System.

My only regret is that I got in too late to take advantage of the cheap drinks!

Sorry I missed out on a good night, I will try to make it out one Wed, but Wed isn't the easiest night to make it out for.
