Disscussion on Spectrum analyzers.
Spectrum analyzers tend to fall into two categories, so called 'swept' spectrum analyzers and FFT based spectrum analyzers. Swept spectrum analyzers work by using one or more notch filters (or mixers) to measure the signal amplitude at a given frequency, by changing (or sweeping) the frequency of this filter a plot of amplitude against frequency can be constructed. Swept spectrum analyzers still have their place in high frequency spectrum analysis, but for audio work they have the disadvantage that the signal must be constant for the whole period of the sweep.
FFT based spectrum analyzers work by digitising the signal of interest using a analog to digital convertor (ADC). The stored values are then processed using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. The advantage of this method is that the spectrum of one off or short duration events can be captured.
How many ppl here use these niffty handy things ? |

Very nice intro!
Would anyone like to add a list of FFT based and Swept Based Analyzers in a list??
I use Inspector but I have no idea which catagory it falls into..
which particular program are those screenshots from? |

inspector xl looks neat, how has it improved ur way of making music ? |

I would think everyone who produces would need to use a spectrum analyzer, as well as a dB volume peak meter.
I use inspecter or the default fruity analyzer if the project gets too big and starts to lagg and i need to free up headroom. Inspecter is cool because it also tells you the stereo image balance in real time.
Me personally? I can't stand the graphed EQ, I prefer to see it in the cute more visual format (rising and falling dB measurement with averaging). :toothless |

well, i need it in long studio sessions as i can't trust my ears after some hours concentrated listening.. |

That’s true cause if I think about it... Most of the time after long hours in my studio I have in my room, all the sounds sound the same after about 5 hours or so, I have no instrument besides my ears which is all deaf already after the long production session or the spectrum analyzer to judge the dynamics of my track.
