as for car tax, you pay for cylinder capacity, to be exactly per started 100 cubic centimeters and it is depending on the kind of emmission group that your car is in (diesel, euro 4...).

Car insurance - same thing - how much does it cost?

as for car insurance, you have a class your car is put in by the government, depending on how much accidents happendend with that model and how much it is sold. you pay in levels, adjusted by not causing damages with your car (hopefully). in general, you start at 140 % and move your way down with, let's say 10 % a year. well, i guess that was very simplistic :)

Broadband - how is broadband done out there and how likely would it exist in a fairly small Bavarian town?

existance, hmm, in a small bavarian town you might be unlucky with it, just pray for the best. as for the price, let's say you pay ~45 € for broadband 2 mbit, flat rate and line rental combined. calls are cheap if you use prefixes, i don't know if u know this in america, well you pay ~1 to ~20 cents a minute, depending on when and whom youre calling, cellphone or homenumber. i guess it's not really expensive:)

i hope i could help a bit, as for the other things i don't really know since my parents are involved with the insurance stuff and as a student you don't have to pay taxes. good luck with the other things abd i hope my english is not that bad so you could understand a few things:D

Thanks :)

If u want to check if DSL is available in the town u want to live at go to www.tcom.de and enter a phone number on the right site at T-DSL Verfügbarkeit

Health Serives - health insurance etc, how much and what is covered? Doctors/dentists - how much do these cost?

Its paid via a percentage of your income. You pay half of the rate and your employer pays the other one. Then you get a health insurance and the only thing u have to pay is 10€ /quarter if u go to a doctor in this quarter. If u dont, u dont have to pay the 10€.

Tax bands - What are the tax bands and percentages taken?

We have a very complicated tax system so it cant be said in general, i can only say that we dont have the lowest taxes for sure here.

For Car and House insurances check http://www.huk24.de/ There u have a calculator for car insurances (i dont know about the house insurances)

--> I have no idea what you mean, please elaborate. What insurance would that be? What would be covered by it?

Car tax - does it exist, or is it on the price of petrol? (didnt see tax discs over there)

Yes, there is one, but it's fairly low. It is measured according to the seize of your engine. x Euro for every 100 ccm. It is also dependent on the environmental classification of your car. I pay below 200 Euro per year for a 1999 BMW with 2500 ccm.

Car insurance - same thing - how much does it cost?

You must have one and it is divided into three options:

1. "Haftpflicht" - Covers the costs of the other car if you hit another car. Does not cover your own costs. Mandatory for everyone owning a car
2. "Teilkasko" - If added to Haftpflicht it covers damages to your car that were caused if you hit an animal or lightning etc. Does not cover the costs on your car if you cause an accident with another car
3. "Vollkasko" - If added to Haftpflicht it covers all the things from Teilkasko + the costs on your car in case of an accident that was caused by you (Exception: You drove under the influence of alcohol or drugs)

Electricity/gas/oil - how much?

Depends on the city you live in. You usually pay around 35 Euro for a 50qm flat for electricity/gas/water. If you own a house and have an oil heating you have to get the oil yourself.

Rates - do you pay General rates like the UK for water etc?

See above. You pay every two month a fixed rate. At the end of the year your actual is evaluated and a new rate (higher or lower) for the next year is being set.

Telephones - how much are the calls, how much is line rental?

You pay a basic fee and then per call. Together with broadband you will need about 100 Euro for phone + broadband

Broadband - how is broadband done out there and how likely would it exist in a fairly small Bavarian town?

See above. Please describe what you would call "small". There is an online check where you can see if broadband is available in your town / zip code. I don`t have the link atm but it`ll be easy to find

Tax bands - What are the tax bands and percentages taken?

It depends on how much money you make. If you`re single the plan to have about 45 % - 50 % of your income be eaten up by taxes, healthcare, unemployment insurance, pension plan etc.

Health Serives - health insurance etc, how much and what is covered?

Mandatory for everyone in Germany. Usually around 13 - 14 % of your income.

Doctors/dentists - how much do these cost?

You pay 10 Euro for your first doctor visit every quarter. Otherwise healthcare is covered by the insurance except for "special" services like a single room in hospital etc. The general rule is: If it`s a real illness and there is a real medical approved cure, then it`s free.

Thanks for that :D

Im shocked at the doctors thing. Here in Ireland you can take out optional private health insurance, and you get half the doctors visit back. But the basic rate for going to the doctors is €40.
darkstar
the insurance does not only pay the doctor visits but also the medication, hospital, operations, etc.....
