So far its been nothing but business here in Saloniki (i.e. playing ball) but on Saturday i ventured into the city to see the sights. I threw on the wicked soothing prog sounds of TAs own Steven Hays into my ipod, parked the car outside the downtown area and walked in.
The city core is amazing, absolutely packed with people (tourists and locals alike) every single day, not to mention at night. Cafes line the streets, clothing shops, shoes shops, restaurants, etc. Whatever you want they have. I decided to go and see some of the historical monuments that are all over the city. Since i only had half a day i only scratched the surface.
Here is a picture of the White Tower. It was a defensive tower built in like AD 500ish. It was once a prison during the turkish occupation and was known as the Bloody Tower since the blood form the victims was smeared on the outside..then it was turned back into a observation tower and it is now a museum.

Several views of the city from the tower...

Next i went to see the Rotonda and the Arch of Galerius. There are lots of excavations all through out the city.

There a ton of little old churches all over the city.

This is one of the squares/walking areas lined with cafes, restaurants, etc.

Pic of the Statue of Aristotle, who was born just outside the city. The University here is named after him as well as the square.

Now people bitch and complain about us downloading music, etc. Here is a picture of one of many who walk around selling bootleg compies of cds, dvds, comp software, games, anything you want. Dirt cheap too, 2 or 3 euro for most cds and dvds. These guys are everywhere. I get at least two or three different guys coming up to me when i eat at my restaurant.
Some more views of the water front.

Here is a pic of my car :D

Here is a pic of the coolest Smart car i've ever seen. Its called a Brabus and its owned by Mercedes Benz. 0.7 liter engine, V3, 115 hp, 17 inch rims, amazingly wicked on gas, and just looks friggen cool. It belongs to one of the guys on my team. They are fairly expensive. The one in the photo is fuuly loaded and is somewhere around 28-29K Euro. A standard version is around 20K.

I had my first coffee ever here in greece, now i'm hooked. We go to one of the Cafes, Raka, everyday after morning training. Here is the view from it.

And here is a pic of Stelios (one of the guys on my team, the owner of the wicked cool car) and me.

And a pic of the infamous greek frappe.

Weather has been really nice so far. Here is a pic of some Pomegranades growing on a tree right by my house.

As i mentioned before the traffic and parking is impossible. I'm sure there are more cars then people here. Here is a pic outside my current apartament. Double parked cars everywhere.

Here is a pic just for Jayx1, the good ol Goodys, the greek mcdonalds!!

Stray Cats and Dogs everywhere...

Finally a pic of a statue of the man himself, Alexander the Great, who's father started the city of Thessaloniki

Thats it for now. Next sunday i'm off to Halkidiki/Mount Athos, with its beautiful beaches and huge Monestaries. The weekend after, its Mount Olympus, home of the Greek Gods of Mythology, and Meteroa. Also Thursday will be my first time going to a Bouzuki (no idea how to spell it but its a traditional greek night out). |

Yeah i just saw that mistake...it was actually started by the king of macedonia and the city is named after his wife, Alexander's sister.
Wasn't Northern Greece a part of macedonia at one point? |

I think it's the other way around.
old macedonia is part of Greece, but current macedonia is inhabited by slavs :conf:
that's why the greeks never accept the name macedonia (they use fyrom)

Dude you can't even imagine this. The craziest thing is that you'll see 150 thousand dollar benzos, beemers, etc parked just like that. People don't really car about their cars here, it seems. |

people just arent as uptight about personal space as we are. I noticed that people will park so close to another car and rest their door on another car to get out and its perfectly acceptable. People here would probably lose their minds even though no damage is done. |

if u go back 4000 years then yes. But to judge a claim based on what happened 1000s of years ago is ludicris. Think of how the world's geography would look today if we reverted everything back to it's "original" owners from thousands of years ago. |
