I love the navigation wheel but what i dont like about it is how it sorts the files on the player.

My buddy had one and i was checking it out and its too hard to find a certain song cause it flops it in weird playalists.

I like to be able to know exactly where the file is. I dunno some weird thing i got but the more i think about it i just might get one...

You don't have to use playlists, you can have the tracks in alpabetical order, by album, by artist, by year...

you have to take some of these "reviews" with a grain of salt. especially the ones that copy/paste the same false review to all Sony MP3 players, without even owning any of them. so let's get a few things clear..

* yes, the NW-HD5 can play your existing MP3 files. it's easy. install Sonic Stage, tell it where your MP3's are, and then Sonic Stage will build a library/table of contents. then transfer your desired songs or albums to the player. done. converting to ATRAC format is OPTIONAL.

* no, you cannot transfer songs that you've purchased through itunes or any other online service (except Sony Connect). the same is true for ipod.. if you purchased songs from Napster or Rhapsody or others, you can't transfer them to your ipod. you'll have to burn them to CD and rip them as DRM-free MP3 files.

* yes, you have to install the Sonic Stage software. but then again, you have to install itunes if you use an ipod. so i don't see what some of you are complaining about. if you want software free MP3 players, then you might want to seek out players from i-River or Jet Audio. those manufacturers offer true drag/drop playback on most/all of their units.

* yes, the NW-HD5 let's you replace the battery without sending it to the factory. just pop open the battery door, remove the old one and replace it with a new one. easy. done. search the web for pictures.

* no, the NW-HD5 isn't overpriced. it's selling for the same price as a 20GB ipod.

* yes, the NW-HD5 is smaller and lighter than a 20GB ipod. search the web for side-by-side comparison pictures.

* yes, the NW-HD5 sounds better than the ipod. well.. this is slightly subjective. ;-) but if you search internet forums, you'll see people comment that the NW-HD5 has better bass response and depth than the ipod.

* yes, all MP3 players come with awful earphones. regardless of what player you buy, toss out the earphones that came with it. spend the extra money and buy a decent set.

* yes, do your own research. don't buy/hate something just because everyone else buys/hates it. search the web for digital audio player forums or electronics forums. you'll find much better reviews and pictures there. and almost all manufacturers offer their instruction manuals online for you to download.

Ive had mine for over a year. No conversion to get files on or off... Ive beaten the hell out of it working out. The thing is solid. The 20 giger is now 199.

right of the bat...frequency: 20-20,000...20 is a bit low, though 20,000 is fine. the bass might be a bit weak. overall seems nice, though price is a little too much. also the audio spec's refer to the player or the headfones? because it also lacks mWs

Do you even know what you are talking about? 20-20,000 is the audible spectrum the human ear hears. Very few tracks go down to that frequency but if needed it can. Do you realize that most CD players have the same frequency? Home stereo's do.

i did shed loads of research and i choose an ipod, absolutely no regrets. It was between that and the NW-HD5. I choose the ipod because the wheel makes navigation so much easier, itunes is an infintiely better bit of software than sonic stage, and the scrolling wheel makes listening to long dj sets a breeze.
