The track's global frequency spectrum should provide some easy answers (ignore the sharp rolloff around 18 kHz, as it's only due to MP3 compression):

Compare this to any mastered track, such as the one below, and you should begin to notice a pattern of a gradual downward slope (as opposed to a flat line), maybe curving inwards slightly:

Of course there are always going to be subtle differences between tracks, not to mention between genres, why you should always let your ears be the final judge, and compare the sound against that of other mastered tracks.

However, just as composers/producers shouldn't be concerned with doing their own mastering, I also think it really isn't necessary to put too great an emphasis on getting the tonal balance of the mixdown perfect. Besides, that's partly the reason mastering is done. Just try to get the mixdown sounding as right as possible by the usual means of monitoring at a low to average volume and in the right mixing evironment, and you should be on the right track. My guess is that static blue was monitoring at too high a volume, something that often causes you to turn the treble up too much. :p

Hehe, back on topic now. :D

i thought the mastering in this song was superb lol, i definately liked this song.

Atlantis-AR, what program is that? i wouldnt mind taking a look at it heh.

all my songs are mastered purely in FL Studio anyway lol, i seen some ppl post with what programs they use to make the song, and im like WOW lol.

il manque une ligne de basse mais sinon c'est sympa! :)

The graphs were just done in Sound Forge, selecting all of the track (CTRL+A) and performing a spectrum analysis (CTRL+8) of it. The FFT size has to be set to 65,536 for such offline processing though, and the graphs have to be logarithmic, zoomed out full, and synced as well.

While a part of mastering is to get the volume up, the point is also to get the tonal balance (think of it as the balance between lows, mids and highs) proper so that it sounds right on a wide variety of setups, at different volumes, not to mention that it just sounds better to the ear. While the RMS (average volume) may have been right, if not a little loud, I didn't find the internal dynamics to work right for the track at all - far too fatiguing after a while. A multiband compressor would've been needed to properly shape and mold the mix before feeding it into a limiter (or FL Studio's soft-cliping algorithm, as may have been used here, hehe. ;) )

Anyway, forget mastering - focus on the mixdown instead. :)
