Kinda back-fired when he didn't know when to shutup and added the bit about being "smartest of all".

The biggest problem with "understanding" any of the ancient scholars is the translation. You are reading that quote through the filter of the person who translated it from the original ancient greek. The only way to truly understand what Socrates was saying is to learn ancient greek and to read his original words. I am sure there is something lost in the translation and if you were able to read the original language, you would be able to think and feel a better connection with the author.

But that aside, I agree with Renegade.

No matter how much you know about something, there is always more to learn about it. Even the most knowledgable about certain topics have more to learn.

if i said i didn't know what it means, does it mean i'm the smartest of them all?

Socrates meant: "Act stupid...no one will know the difference" ;)

Being smart and having knowledge are not the same thing. Any person can read something, remember it, and spew it out later...but that doesn't make them smart.

simply put, that's the right idea.

if you are smart you will seek the answers and the journey will be your life.

Yeah thanks. Why don't you go back and read my FIRST post in this thread.

I don't think it's a lesson in humility so much as it is a reflection that one can never know too much.

Leave your mind open to new knowledge. Never eliminate the possibility that there is something more to learn. You cannot know everything, accepting this makes you smarter than those who think they know everything.

Here are two quotes that compliment Socrates' well:

To get thine ends, lay bashfulness aside; Who fears to ask, doth teach to be deny'd.

Modesty is a shining light; it prepares the mind to receive knowledge, and the heart for truth.
