Will there ever be a 4?! :p |
There can't be a 4. The longest sequence of similar characters must be three. If you examine the rule that generates the strings, the characters are alternating digits indicating amount or kind. If you had four characters in a row, XXXX, either they would be amount-kind-amount-kind, and hence should have been written X ( being the character denoting the sum of X and X), or kind-amount-kind-amount, in which case the sequence must be part of a longer sequence, YXXXXZ. In that case it should have been written XXZ, instead. Hence, there can never be four similar characters in sequence, and no 4 (or 5, 6,...) in the strings generated. Q.E.D. |

4. I started with three and felt a need
to cut one off and so I did the deed
To my dismay it fell to the floor,
and in my hand I then had four.
Cutting another, I did contrive,
and in my hand I then had five.
Name for me these growing things,
and bask in the glory a correct answer brings!

I think the answer to this is cutting the corners off a sheet of paper. Cutting one corner produces two more, one of which replaces the one you cut. So the person in this riddle started with a triangle, cut off a tip which produced four corners, and so on.
The hint gave this one away :) |

2. Consider these strings: 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, ... what is the next item?
|
Come on people.:eyes:
13112221
13 11 22 21
I looked over and this is the only one still incorrectly answered.
Edit: skimmed too fast. This one was a tough one, that you rarely hear. |

there is one 3 one 1 two 2's and 2 1's
