Why call the US america???? (pg. 3)

LOL, HÄGAR is here!!!
Just one question: How do you call the citizens of the USA? I have no idea beside call them americans, but thats not right as we learned in this thread:D
I apologize to have called the USA america, I dont want you to assort with them if you have aproblem with that:rolleyes: Btw: Where are you coming from venomX or what flag is this? Costa Rica (just a guess)? |

| well i think the reason people call USA = America is because its the United States of America ..so pople call them Americans or call the country america ....thats the reason why people call USA - America.....there not saying that because they thing USA represents all of north america |

The only one who got it right was the greek all the other persons who replied are just saying the same nonsense the first ppl who replied posted. And as for the first island columbus landed was san salvador and then la hispaniola if i am not wrong and about that last bit being rude im sorry but its a reallity my friend u just dont see it cuz u actually live in the us but wats one to do maybe someday you'll know what i am talkin about but as long as u live in the us u wont

The problem is there is no other commonly used term for citizens of the USA like other countries...
Citizens of:
Canada = Canadians
Mexico = Mexicans
Brazil = Brazilians
etc...
United States of America = Americans!!!
but what should it be? I mean, what would be a better name to avoid confusion with the whole continent? United Statesians? Usaians? US Americans?
What about other countries with really long or weird names?
Like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for instance... are they just called Emirates or Emiratians? |

I said nonesense? Columbus was 500 yrs late discovering America, my ancestors beat him to the punch...
The continent name 'America' came WAY before the "United States of America" came to be...
So North, South, Central, America refers to a continent not a specific country... So Americans accurately means anyone in those continents.. BUT modern culture has made the term 'American' right or wrong meaning to be from the United States of America...
Nothing really complicated about this, just that the word American is not used correctly, but I don't mind, Canadian sounds good to me :D |

| all people do is Fuss Fuss Fuss..WHy this why that... whats the big deal that people from the USA are called Americans ...the only reason why people from the US are called Americans is because in our countrys name the last word is america so they call people americans if USA didnt have american in the countrys name that most likely they wouldnt be called americans they would just be called something different.... it has nothing to do weather who shipped here first and discovered it .... i know the actual name came from a Italian discoverer but the reason why people here are called americans isnt because we feel that we represent the continent more then anyone else....its just the fact that its all in the name of our country like someone else said there wouldnt be a better word to call us .... i just think its stupid who ever gets mad at something like this .... very childish ...always making a mountain out of a moal hill some of u |

Its not like there was a concerted effort by the USA to call themselves "Americans", The US never passed a bill saying "all citizens of the USA shall now be refferred to as Americans". It was probably the Europeans that startd calling them Americans because they couldn't think of anything else to call them.
Venom: I understand thatyou, being closer to the US than anyone else may feel the pressure of US culture (heck even people in Central Asia are feeling the influence of US culture) but thats no excuse for losing control of yourself, making broad sweeping generalisations and dissmissing everyone else's posts as 'nonsense' (Thor's post might have been a bit off topic but was completely accurate and made perfect 'sense').
Thor: I am Russian, and I recently heard that the first Russians were Vikings (apparently Kiev was a Viking trading town or something). Originally Russians looked very Scandinavian -blond hair, pale skin, blue eyes - and some still do (like me :D ) although a lot of different blood has been mixed into us (we got taken over by the Mongols for a couple of centuries, and there are a whole bunch of surrounding Asian tribes). Also I think traditional Russian peasants clothing looks a bit 'Vikingish' and the personalities are quite similar. Oh yeah - and apparently there was some Scandinavian archaeologist looking for the remains of Thor (or was it Odin) in Russia recently.
Anyways I was wondering if you knew any historical facts about Vikings in Russia. |

I understand you perfectly what you mean, first of all, in the UNITED STATES they teach that America is divided in two, South and North America, is like they are ashamed of been part, or included with the rest of the continent, cause I know that in everywhere else is called AMERICA the continent, whereever you were born on the continent , you are an AMERICAN, the United States is UNITED STATES of AMERICA, its part of america, but I clearly understand what you mean, why do people on the USA like to be different then everyone else on the world ?!?! .. hhmm.. |

You are correct, in fact the name Russia comes from a Swedish area that was called Rus (sp?) ... So the name comes from the Swedish Vikings, since they did so much trade through the volga/danube?(Cant remember which)
Its amazing how far the reach of influence the vikings had, they had layed seige on Paris until the French king allowed the Vikings free reign to pillage and own what is now called "Normandy".... The UK was controlled by Vikings for centauries, and there was even a Viking King in England, I just can't recall his name right now.....
The Vikings at one point were controlling or living in much of Europe, but they became part of the country they were living in as the Vikings went from being a warrior race to a peacfull people... |

Cause South and North America is tought as AMERICA , then why dont we call South Africa and North Africa ?!?! South Asia and North Asia ?!?!
