How do you guys feel about presets on synths.
Do you use them... or you feel that using them wont be original because anybody could use the same preset.....
Would you rather make your own???

A preset should be viewed no differently from a template. Tweak it.
Unless - you find a preset you love and base an entire track around said preset. Generally speaking, though, you should never use more than one preset without altering all but one. The odds of two presets fitting together better than you could make them fit are hardly any. |

| I use bass presets all the time from Synths, but i always tweak them to my liking, b/c i have a hard time making bass with synths. I rarely use lead presets though. |

i dont think its the preset itself, but how you use it that makes a difference...i mean if youre using a preset and a tune that someone else has already used...then thats a nono
but im sure some kickass producers nowadays use presets!
+1 on the tweaking though |

I don't like using presets. I only used them when I was starting out as a pure beginner to see how synths work.
I don't think it should matter if you use presets or not. As long as what you're doing sounds good and original it shouldn't matter. |

I use presets, but I tweak them.
the same goes for sampled loops.
I like to tweak the living shiznitz out of them. It's dead fun. |

presets are always a good starting point for your own sounds. choose a preset which sounds similar to something you might need and tweak a little. you might ask yourself do you consider yourself to be a musician or a sound designer. i consider myself to be a musician, so i basically use presets, and tweak them a little if neccessary to get my own sound.
also, by browsing through presets you can find some sounds you would never make yourself simply because you wouldn't even consider making.
so, HELL YEA! GIMME MORE! :) |

I do both actually. Often a good preset shows off what you might be able to get out of the synth. Tweaking presets is often very useful as well.
I don't see why you shouldn't use them :) |

I agree.
It's really not that hard to find presets that "fit together" when there are literally thousands of them out there. Anything that doesn't fit, you can usually EQ.
In fact, since there are so many presets out there, there's a pretty good chance that most of the sounds you come up with have already been done before.
This is not to say that I only use presets in my productions; I use lots of presets, I tweak lots of presets, and I synthesize lots of my own stuff. I do whatever I feel I need, no more, no less. Why reinvent the wheel - if I can't find the sound I want then I'll make it, but otherwise, why not use somebody else's?
IMHO, the "uniqueness" of a producer's sound really comes from skill with effects and arrangement, not synthesis. There are only so many sounds you can make with a particular synth, but there is practically unlimited potential for mangling sounds and arranging them. Also using sounds in unexpected ways, like stuttering, using it as a modulation carrier, smearing them to make pads or atmospheric fx, etc.
Just do what works, don't worry about what other people think is good or bad. |

Very much true.
Look for example at the incredibly extended use of the infamous 'supersaw'. A lot of musicians apply it in their own way and can create typical patterns that will still allow the supersaw to link to 'their sound'.
That's where composition and creativity play an important role. Give for example 20 producers a specific preset to start with and let them make a full melody with it (the preset free-to-tweak). There might still be quite a few that sound the same, though it is very much possible that the majority of them has done something completely different with it.
All in all, I think presets are of much value to a VSTi or any other instrument. |
