I've read that one shouldn't over compress sounds.
Turn down the level on the input signal and make sure you have no clipping with the compressors turned off. If you use a bad software compressor and you get clipping, you might get distortion. |

Where did you check your levels, and where are you compressing?
Compression in itself can cause distortion if you do it in the wrong place. Sometimes a brickwall leveller will work better, and sometimes neither will work and you just need to EQ.
I'd suggest you mute all your tracks and gradually bring them in until you hear the distortion, then you will have your answer. |
